RihannaRihannaAmong all the budding pop artists that seem to come out of nowhere and are instantaneously plastered all over our T.V. screens, there is one young woman in particular who stands out and has done since the beginning of her career. Rihanna has a talent that many others would love to call their own; she has the innate ability to capture an entire audience with her stage-work and finesse when it comes to singing. In early 2005 she was signed to Def Jam Recordings.

She has been in the spotlight almost since the very start, when in 2005 she released her first hit single, Pon de Replay. This song would immediately catch on with its urban R&B-style beat. It went to No. 2 on the charts in Ireland and reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100; but Rihanna was only beginning. Her debut album, Music of the Sun, was released following the success of Pon de Replay and it showed us just how serious this young girl of only 17 years old was about the music business. Only a month after the release of Music of the Sun, Rihanna began work on her second album, A Girl like Me.

The first single to feature on this ingenious album was SOS. This song would become her first number one hit single, coming in at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. SOS was nominated for Record of the Year in the UK, but lost out to Patience, by Take That. A Girl like Me would also feature singles such as Unfaithful, We Ride, and Break it Off. Rihanna was “on a roll”, and everyone knew she had barely even started.

Her follow up album Good Girl Gone Bad would bring a completely new side to Rihanna.. She changed her look completely, as do most artists at some point in their careers.  She decided to go for an edgier sound, with more dance-pop songs, unlike the familiar reggae beat found in her previous albums. From this album she would go on to release seven massive hits, including songs like Umbrella, Shut Up and Drive, Don’t Stop the Music, and Rehab. Good Girl Gone Bad soon placed at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart and sold over 160,000 copies in its first week on the shelves.

Even then, Rihanna still had so much more to show us. In 2009 she came out with a completely different beat. Rated R would become a huge turning point in Rihanna’s musical career. She adopted a new, darker sound that could be seen in the albums lead single, Russian Roulette. Rihanna was certainly on her way to stardom at this stage and Rated R featured many hit singles, including Hard, Te Amo, and the brilliant Rude Boy.

In 2011 Rihanna hit us once more with another outstanding album, the masterpiece that would be called Loud. This momentous album sold over 270,000 in its first week and placed No. 3 on the Billboard 200. Its lead single Only Girl in the World, reached number 1 in over 10 countries and received a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording at the 53rd Grammy Awards. With the controversially fantastical hit S&M reaching number 1 on the Billboard 200, Rihanna became the youngest artist in the chart's history to achieve ten number-one singles.

Rihanna’s upcoming album Talk That Talk is set to be released on November 21st 2011.
