Canon’s theme for the night was the ‘power to see things differently’ and apart from the EOS 650D, a whole range of cameras and lens was on show.

DPNlive took the opportunity to talk with Philip Brady, Director and Head of Canon Ireland to get an overview from him on the evening’s events.

“It’s a double celebration really,” explained Brady. “We’re celebrating 25 years of EOS and we’re also sponsoring Euro 2012. What makes this year extra special is it’s the first time we have sponsored the tournament when Ireland has been involved. When the EOS range was first launched, it was aimed at the professional and the high-end enthusiast. In the last few years with the introduction of the EOS 300D and now the 650D we have a camera which covers all price points and satisfies all levels of enthusiasts from the entry level camera user right up to top end professional. The EOS 650D is a high-end entry level camera with video as do all our SLR cameras.”

Brady went on to say that worldwide Canon are leaders in the field of cameras with sales of the EOS series alone now standing at 50 million units since its launch 25 years ago and in terms of lenses the figure to-day stands at 70 million.

“Lenses are very important for Canon,” he added. “We have over 70 lenses which will suit all types of situations, portrait or long distance. Our cameras will cover just about any eventuality even for architects who have to take very specific shots.”

EOS 650DEOS 650DIn Ireland Canon has increased its market share penetration although as Brady pointed out, in terms of sales, these are ‘holding’ but not ‘growing’.

“The EOS range is fantastic value for money,” continued Brady. “The features available in these cameras, particularly an entry level model with an 80 to 55 lens, are amazing and the cost is sub €500 .It’s a fantastic piece of kit. It will have video, 5fps (frames per second) and interchangeable lenses so if you buy into the camera lens system and want to upgrade, you can bring your lenses with you. So a 5D will also use the same lens as the entry level 650D.”

The new EOS 650D is now available throughout Ireland although a word of warning as Brady pointed out. Demand for new models normally outstrips supply for the first few months until production catches up. So don’t be surprised if you have to wait a little while longer to get your hands on the new EOS 650D.
