Free internet to be fitted to Capitals transport system

Internet access (Wifi) has been available on Irelands Rail intercity services and most of the countries intercity buses for some time now so the news that the capitals DART and commuter trains are to be fitted with Wifi is welcome news.

Dublin Bus is in the process of acquiring 80 new vehicles which will facilitate Wifi access and trials have already taken place on two LUAS trams. It is anticipated that all trams will have Wifi by 2013.

Transport Minister Leo Varadkar is quoted as saying that this will mean that almost the entire public transport system will be fitted with internet facilities over the coming months.

One of the reasons behind the move is to ensure that public transport remains an attractive means of travel for people over the car.

With so many individuals now using smartphones, iPhones and iPads on the move the development is welcome.Additionaly many tourists rely on their smartphones and tablets to access information on places to visit and hotel locations and this new initiative will make life much easier for them.

Varadkar said that for Ireland to compete as a serious tourist destination it must offer 21st century services.

So it looks like rush hour will never be the same again for Dublin’s commuters.

New website boasts comprehensive listing of nightlife in Dublin.

Four Dublin-based entrepreneurs have just launched CityLive; a website dedicated to nightlife in Dublin. The aim of the new site is to provide the most comprehensive, up-to-date and extensive listings of what’s going on every night of the week around the capital.

CityLive_ DublinCityLive_ DublinFrom venue details to event nights, CityLive is aimed at people who want to know what’s on offer any night of the week. It is updated directly by bar, club and venue managers and the website has been designed to provide the most accurate listings of what’s hot in Dublin.

CityLive is headed by Graham McWilliams, Vincent Mc Williams, Conor Skelly and Gary Creaner. The company was set up 13 months ago when two of the four founders noted that sourcing what was on offer in Dublin proved difficult. The company then moved into the Guinness Enterprise Centre where they spent six months gaining invaluable advice from experienced start-ups who helped them develop their project.

Speaking about the launch of CityLive, Graham said, “We’re delighted to be presenting CityLive to the public for the first time. What we’ve done is given all the venues in Dublin access to our interface which allows them to input their event details onto our database with the minimum of effort. In 4-5 minutes a venue can have updated their entire week’s events. We now have a product that is easy for both venues and the general public to use and has a comprehensive listing of what’s on every night of the week in Dublin. Furthermore we seem to have built a product that can with little effort be replicated for any city in the world.”

Although the initial launch of the site just covers Dublin, the company aims to expand into Cork, Belfast and then to the UK. CityLive is currently only a website and mobile website but work is in progress to develop it into an app which the owners say will be completed by late October.

New technology to help brands capitalise on their social media presence and Facebook following.

XMPie, a Xerox company has released a new technology which it says will allow XMPie customers to embed a web-to-print app on their clients’ Facebook pages. uStore Facebook Connect will allow fans to order branded print materials that are personalized using the fans’ Facebook data, and/or that of their friends.

XM Pie XeroxXM Pie Xerox“This technology gives our customers the means to truly take their multichannel capabilities to new heights” said Jacob Aizikowitz, president of XMPie. “Now they can create apps for their clients’ Facebook pages that enrich social media interactions by adding personalized and relevant print to the media mix. This allows brands to add value to their social media presence while extending their online relationship with fans into the tangible physical world, creating an overall richer and more valuable brand experience.”

The new technology is simple to use. The application icon appears under a company’s cover photo. By clicking the icon, fans enter the uStore portal where they can select an available document template, such as a calendar. After giving all permissions required, the document is then personalized with information from their Facebook profile. From there, an instant PDF proof of the personalized document can be generated, and/or the fan can move through the order process of final copy and delivery. If the fan allows it, an automatic status post to their Facebook wall can be triggered at this point to help the fan share the experience.

Facebook Connect is available to customers with uStore 6.0 and PersonalEffect Print MI or higher. This enables the XMPie customer to offer the application as a turnkey service to their clients—as well as own the data and create and fulfil the merchandise. The company added that this is the first offering of its kind in the marketplace with this model.

Dynamic document templates for customization/personalization and purchase within the uStore portal are created by the service provider or marketing personnel using the XMPie uCreate plugin to Adobe InDesign, and can range from greeting cards, event invitations and various types of calendars, to booklets and posters. Such document templates can include variable elements, such as coupons, QR Codes, and even advertisements. XMPie will also make Facebook-ready dynamic document templates available on the XMPie Marketplace for purchase by customers.

“Facebook Connect technology allows XMPie customers to help brands strengthen their existing social media relationship with their fans, as well as attract more followers through their fans’ network as a result of its viral nature,” said Idan Youval, product manager, Business Portals, at XMPie. “This can be a very powerful brand builder for companies with thousands or millions of Facebook fans, plus it will drive more demand and volume for their print and marketing service providers.”

Dublin-based singer-songwriter wins top prize in competition run by Microsoft and MUZU TV to find Ireland’s best unsigned act

Singer-songwriter Carol Keogh has won Unsigned and Online, a competition to promote independent Irish music. Unsigned and Online is a collaboration between Microsoft and MUZU TV, in association with IMRO (Irish Music Rights Organisation), designed to encourage and challenge unsigned musicians to use a variety of Microsoft products and digital media to promote their band. The competition ran for ten weeks and saw bands and artists from around the country vie for the number one spot. The artists’ videos were viewed nearly 100,000 times.

Carol KeoghCarol KeoghCarol, a Dublin-based singer walked away with a prize worth over €10,000 for her song, ‘Into the Blue’. The prize consists of a digital marketing campaign across Microsoft platforms, including Windows Live and MSN, an acoustic session in MUZU TV’s studio and a slot on stage at an upcoming gig at Dublin’s The Academy.

Carol’s song had to beat off some stiff competition from second-placed Policy with ‘Suggestion Box’ and The Last Crash with ‘Melt Me’ who finished third.

Carol has been working the music scene for a number of years, writing, performing and recording with various bands, such as The Plague Monkeys and The Tycho Brahe. Since 2008 she has been performing as a solo artist and is currently demoing tracks with her backing band, The City Fathers, for her forthcoming debut album, which will be called ‘Mongrel City’.

Making the announcement, Orla Sheridan, consumer channels group manager at Microsoft, said: “We are thrilled for Carol. ‘Into the Blue’ is a really great song. Carol has shown a real determination throughout her music career and the win will give her added exposure to help with her continued success.”

She added: “We know that there are countless bands and musicians around Ireland using digital and social media as a tool to gain and maintain their fan base. The power of online has been shown time and again as unsigned acts try to exploit its full potential by sharing their music.”

Ciaran Bollard, CEO at MUZU TV said: “Unsigned and Online is a great example of what can be achieved by harnessing the power of the internet and technology to record music and create music videos at a fraction of what it used to cost artists. This is a chance for Irish artists to gain nationwide and international exposure.”

Carol has previously released two albums with The Plague Monkeys and, while performing with The Tycho Brahe, she was nominated for Best Female Singer at the 2002 Meteor Awards. The band was also nominated that year for Best Irish Band.

Carol said after winning Unsigned and Online: “It’s great to have won the competition, which was based on votes from the public, and the timing couldn’t be better. Digital and social media are the bedrock for unsigned musicians as it allows us to share our music with large groups of people. The exposure that I will get through the prize from Microsoft and MUZU will help greatly in getting my album finished and ready for release.”

All of the tracks are still available to view on www.muzu.tv/unsignedandonline.

Sky has launched the newest version of its electronic programme guide with a number of enhancements. The new look user interface will make it easier for its customers to locate their favourite programmes, and discover new shows.

The new features will be rolled out to Sky’s customers during the course of this year and will include:

HD graphics, designed to offer viewers a sharper and sleeker looking user interface.

  • A navigation update, with the number of channels on each page of the TV Guide increasing from six to eight. This has been done to provide users with a more convenient way to browse through content.
  • New categorised recordings in the Sky+ planner. Viewers will be able to browse through their recorded programmes by type for the first time, with content divided into categories such as entertainment, movies, sports, news, documentaries, kids or music.
  • New landing page for different categories, presenting viewers with a range of viewing options for each type of entertainment. Sky Movies customers for instance, can choose from a series of icons to watch movies live, browse movies stored on their planner, or search for a particular film, all through a single page.

Luke Bradley Jones, Sky’s Brand Director, TV Products, commented:

“Hosting over 1.2 billion customer interactions each month, the Sky Guide is a fundamental part of the Sky experience, which is why we’ve worked hard on these new features to continue to give our customers the best experience we possibly can. We also want to make it as easy as possible for our customers to find the content they love, and we’re confident that our new look EPG does just that.”
