SAFETY WHEN COOKING

By Damian Brady
Firesmart
4th April 2012

The long summer evenings beckon with the sound of busy lawn mowers. With our recent good spell of weather my nose was pleasantly surprised with that lovely BBQ aroma and hearing the children outdoors having fun is a great lift to our spirits. In these recessionary times not many of us get the luxury of eating out as often as we might like. With this in mind, more and more of us are picking up those cookery books and maybe even get to watch the odd “30 Minute Meal“ TV programmes. Time preparing food in the kitchen is meant to be fun time and we certainly don’t want it turn into disaster time. Common sense should be a key ingredient in the cooking arena. General caution should be adhered to. Here are some fire safety tips when cooking so we don’t make our fun time turn into panic and disaster.

The AA home insurance offers such good advice as

Cooking

  • Always keeps an eye on food whilst it’s being heated.
  • Keep children away from appliances when cooking.
  • Roll-up sleeves or, if possible, wear short or tight fitting sleeves when cooking.
  • Try not to reach over the cooker.
  • Turn handles inward so pots and pans won't be pulled or knocked off the cooker.
  • Have a professional technician inspect your heating, cooling, and water appliances annually.
  • Have the fireplace chimney checked and cleaned routinely by a chimney "sweep" at least once a year.

Annual inspections

Other useful tips include:

–        to wear shoes also to prevent slipping and to protect your feet from any sharp object that may fall

–        as well as children keep pets away from cooking appliances

–        be careful of hot water , flames & hot surfaces

–        be careful of paper towels, dish cloths and any other easily combustible material

In an article from the Meath county council, it states that most house fires start in the kitchen. We all may want a new kitchen but this is not the way to obtain one. Appliances must be indecently plugged into wall sockets and not “daisy chained” together. We all may have at some stage left cooking unattended which unfortunately can be fatal. Have you ever come in late at night perhaps after a few drinks and cranked up the oven or worse the chip pan to be awoken to the smoke alarm? The old style chip pans are lethal and can easily ignite especially if the oil hasn’t being changed regularly. Take my advice; use oven chips which are healthier or at least use a deep fat fryer with a control thermostat. Keep cooking appliances such as toasters, hobbs clean & clear of stale food etc.

Have a fire safety plan in place and if in doubt GET OUT, STAY OUT and GET THAT FIRE BRIGADE OUT. Having a fire blanket and fire extinguisher handy can evade a disaster; never ignore a smoke alarm assuming it’s a false alarm as this only puts you and others at risk.

In today’s world we all live very busy lives while trying to balance our home, work, and family responsibities. We often get very little time for ourselves and sometimes the important things in life are put on the long finger. We can’t forget the really important things such as working smoke alarms and an escape plan in case of fire. How would we get out? How would we tackle the fire? Like most people, you have probably said to yourself” will never happen to me. Our reactions in a panic situation are unpredictable, especially if one is wakes up suddenly in the dead of night. Unfortunately this is when most house fires occur. Prevention is always the best cure for this problem.  By having working smoke alarms correctly fitted a practised fire escape plan in place with spare keys and a flash lamp and whistle easily accessible you will greatly increase your chances in a fire situation. It’s the carbon monoxide gas (smoke) that is the real killer in a fire. Having non working smoke alarms or leaving doors open at night would allow smoke to travel freely through your house.

A recent article on Fire Safety in the home by Meath County Council stated that “About 50 people die each year because of preventable fires in the home. Every fire has a cause and most often, there’s a common-sense, simple method of prevention. Careless attentions to fireplaces, heaters, smoking and cooking equipment are leading cause of fire-death and injury.”It also went on to say that 2 the age groups most at risk are the under 12’s and over 60’s let’s start with three golden rules:

  1. Plan and practice an escape drill with your family.
  2. Install smoke alarms to give you an early warning.
  3. Survey your home to ensure that it is firesafe. Most often when a fire breaks out, so does panic and error. Things can happen very quickly and in a situation where seconds can save lives. You and your family need to to act without hesitation. A rehearsed fire escape drill can make the difference between life and death

Most fires happen at night while people are asleep. When there’s a fire, smoke will actually put sleeping people into a deeper sleep, it will not wake them. By installing smoke alarms you will have early warning devices which give you time to act before you and your family are overcome by dangerous smoke and fumes.

Most domestic fires start in the kitchen area. Having a fire extinguisher and fire blanket will substantially reduce the risk of fire spreading. There are several fire extinguishers available: the best all round type is the dry powder fire extinguisher in terms for fire power, value for money and class of fire in which they can tackle. Dry Powder extinguishers have a blue colour code on their front and can be used on class A, B, C.  Having the extinguisher fitted in a convenient location such as close to the back door will also increase ones chances of survival. One should only tackle a fire if they feel confident in doing so.  As in any fire situation, the Fire Brigade should be contacted immediately by dialling 112 or 999 preferably from outside the home.

Remember:

NEVER GIVE A FIRE A CHANCE.

Picture the scene: you should have left the house 15 minutes earlier but you are determined to grab some breakfast.  Suddenly without warning what is that really loud annoying BEEPING sound coming from the hallway? The toast has burned and awoken the whole house with the warning sound of the smoke alarm. This may not be the ideal start to your day but if this happens you should be glad to know that your smoke alarm is working. This particular annoyance can be avoided by having a heat sensor alarm rather than a smoke alarm in the kitchen area. Smoke alarms are there for our safety and particularly when we are asleep.

Never give fire a chance because fire/smoke can literally spread throughout a building in a matter minutes. All smoke alarms should be checked on a regular basis (weekly). In particular any battery operated device should have the battery replaced annualy.Smoke alarms/detectors save lives. This means smoke alarms that are fully functional, not disarmed because the alarm goes off occasionally and annoys you

The history of smoke alarms/detectors started with American inventor Francis Thomas Upton. He created the first fire alarm in 1890. He was a colleague of Thomas Edison and there’s evidence Edison worked on the device.

Each year in Ireland we have Fire Safety Week.

The theme of Fire Safety Week 2011 reminded us of the importance of having working smoke alarms installed in your home and to think constructively about fire safety in advance of winter. Statistically most fire tragedies occur in the winter months. The average smoke alarm costs approximately €10, which is a small price to pay for peace of mind. Remember, your sense of smell does not work when you are asleep and the smoke from a fire can induce a deep sleep. By waking you up in the early stages of a fire, a smoke alarm can literally save your life.

In the event of a fire never re-enter the house – remember get out, stay out and get the fire brigade out.

On average forty six people died in fires in the Republic of Ireland each year since 1998. The vast majority of these are fires occurred in domestic dwellings. Unfortunately a number of these dwellings did not have working smoke alarms. Tragically, most of these deaths could have been prevented if working smoke alarms were installed in the home according to an article from Kildare county council. It also goes on to say that most fires happen at night when people are asleep. By installing smoke alarms –you will have early warning devices which can give you time to act before you and your family are overcome by dangerous fumes and smoke. As a general guide there should be a minimum of one smoke alarm installed for each floor in the house i.e. one in the hall and one on the landing. For additional fire protection you should consider installing smoke detectors in the kitchen and living rooms and even in your bedrooms. The Building Regulations require you to have mains powered smoke / heat detectors in your home. If someone at home is hearing impaired they may not hear an audible smoke alarm i.e. if they do not wear a hearing aid at night. There are smoke alarm systems on the market that use a strobe light or a vibrating pad (that can be placed under the pillow), to provide early warning in the event of a fire. Some smoke alarms now come with a ten year (lithium) battery. These alarms are designed to be replaced as a whole unit thus avoiding the need for battery replacement. If in any doubt replace the smoke alarm. Smoke alarms should be positioned at ceiling level. Keep the smoke alarm clean.. Ensure that everyone in the household is familiar with the sound of the smoke alarm and has practiced and perfected the evacuation drill. When buying a smoke alarm ensure that it conforms to one of the following standards:

Irish Standard IS 409: 1998, British Standard BS 5446

If your smoke alarm sounds never assume it’s a false alarm! – Always act immediately. Better to be safe than sorry.

Make a Fire Escape Plan for your Family and perfect it.

Remember, the Essential Rules of Fire Safety

*Install smoke alarms to give you an early warning in the event of a fire.

*Assess your home and eliminate fire hazards.

*Make a Fire Escape Plan for your family and perfect it.

*There is no going back to save a life – Remember “Get out and Stay Out”

*Call 112/999 to get Fire Brigade

*The best cure is prevention and never gives fire a chance.

*Remember Smoke alarms save lives
