Samsung and iPhone still the main players.

A recent report from GfK has confirmed what most of us already knew. Nearly three-quarters of all mobile (cell) phones sold in Ireland are now smartphones, dominated by touchscreen devices like the iPhone or Samsung Galaxy. Sales figures for December confirm that two thirds of all prepay mobile phones were touchscreen smartphones.

The findings also reveal that we are paying more for our mobiles, with one fifth of Irish consumers paying between €100 and €150 for each device.

It highlighted the fact that 75 per cent of all handset sales here are now in the prepay category.

Considering the fact that almost every task can be done on a smartphone these days with Apps, including banking online, downloading films, even bus or train updates, should we question the future need of PC’s/laptops?

The younger generation has answered the question and companies have jumped on board to deliver an APP appropriate to their demands.

This is a one off cost to companies (apart from updates) so the ROI is money well spent.

But is it the death knell of PC’s/Laptops? I hope not.

For me, while I use my Smartphone for weather, banking and texting, I like to type and be able to read information without having to use a magnifying glass.

My Smartphone’s screen is just too small and using the keypad is simply, ‘hard work’.

But I know from experience that technology will win in the end. The Smartphone is aptly named.

Social media to allow anyone to

contribute and share thoughts, questions and solutions

to urban poverty challenges.

GENEVA/Dublin –18th February 2013:

Join The ConversationJoin The ConversationAnyone, anywhere, with Internet access is invited to participate in this year’s bi-annual Forum of the World Alliance of Cities Against Poverty (WACAP) in Dublin, Ireland this Wednesday and Thursday, 20 and 21 February. The WACAP Forum is a global conference organized to discuss the growing problem of urban poverty. This is the first time since the Alliance was established in 1997 that those affected by urban challenges – the citizens – are able to take part in the discussions, submit questions, offer solutions and follow the conference online.

“This year, the 8th Forum of the World Alliance of Cities Against Poverty in Dublin  will be more engaging than ever - anyone with Internet, email access, a Twitter or Facebook account will be able contribute and share his or her thoughts, questions and solutions to urban poverty challenges,” said Adam Rogers, WACAP Coordinator at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), a co-host of the event along with the Dublin City Council in partnership with UN WomenUNICEF and the UN Institute for Training and Research. “We are inviting people from all over the world to connect with participants of the Forum through social media and discuss how to tackle urban poverty issues. And we’re all answering the same big question: How can we make cities smart, safe and sustainable?”

By making the event truly interactive, the event organizers hope to crowdsource – i.e. tap into the experiences and expertise of ordinary people everywhere – ideas and examples for how to best make cities smart, safe and sustainable. More than 500 high level delegates, including mayors, municipal civil servants, innovators at the forefront of developing smart technologies, along with representatives from civil society, women's organizations, and NGOs specialized in poverty reduction, safety, prevention and access to services are expected to attend the conference.

Two new apps released for the Window 8 environment.

Windows 8 User Interface showing Norton Studio appWindows 8 User Interface showing Norton Studio appNorton has confirmed that its consumer security products Norton 360, Norton Internet Security, and Norton AntiVirus are fully compatible with Microsoft’s new Windows 8 operating system.  The company claimed that its latest releases have been optimised to make Windows 8 safer and faster compared with running Windows Defender on Windows 8.  In addition Norton has also released two new apps for the Windows 8 environment, available now on the Windows Store.

Norton Studio

•        Companion app to Norton 360, Norton Internet Security or Norton AntiVirus. It’s designed to enable consumers to manage, fix, update or renew Norton protection for their devices from within the new Windows 8 user interface

•        Users can see at a glance the security status of their PCs and other devices

•        Integrates with Windows 8 for one-click access from the new user interface    desktop

“With the release of Windows 8 it’s important to recognise that consumers still need a comprehensive security solution – not just basic antivirus,” said Chris Christiansen, Program Vice President for IDC's Security Products and Services group.  “The types of threats most prevalent today are very sophisticated, complex and use social engineering to prey on consumer habits, so it’s crucial that security solutions not only address the current threat landscape, but also the latest trends in technology.  By providing a more secure environment and optimised performance for Windows 8, Norton is improving and simplifying the user experience for consumers adopting this new platform.”

Free or unsecured Wi-Fi, putting sensitive information at risk

norton hotspot privacynorton hotspot privacyNorton has released Norton Hotspot Privacy which the company describes is a new service that helps protect consumers using public Wi-Fi connections.  Available in the U.S. and U.K. for Mac and PC, Norton Hotspot Privacy has been designed to automatically create a private connection – or virtual private network – allowing users to decide what they share online, irrespective of where they connect to the Internet.

It’s estimated that two-thirds of online adults use free or unsecured Wi-Fi networks, such as coffee shops, airports and public parks.  But along with the convenience come risks of exposing sensitive information to cybercriminals. Now with Norton Hotspot Privacy the company says that it will enable users to become ‘invisible’ on the network and also encrypt their username, password and other confidential information they may be entering online. Consumers can sign into the Norton Hotspot Privacy Web portal, download the client and the VPN will automatically configure to create a private connection.

While a significant amount of online adults who use free or unsecured Wi-Fi have concerns about the security of those services, the truth is many are still putting sensitive or financial information at risk by accessing personal information such as email and social networking sites via free or unsecured Wi-Fi.  Meanwhile, hijacking or “sniffing” Wi-Fi is easier than ever. Using free, legal apps or hardware costing less than £70 ($100), hackers can gain access to online banking, email and social networking information transmitted via even password-protected Wi-Fi networks.

“Increasingly, public Wi-Fi is a part of everyday life, providing people with a convenient way to connect on the go,” said Dave Cole, vice president, product management, Consumer Business Unit, Symantec Corporation. “With Norton Hotspot Privacy, consumers are able to take advantage of the convenience of public Wi-Fi, with the confidence of knowing their information is secure and their online activities remain private.”

Main features of Norton Hotspot Privacy

  • Creating a secure, private connection that cannot be seen by eavesdropping software
  • Making the user “invisible” on public networks, so no one can track or monitor their online activities
  • Protecting the user’s entire Wi-Fi session when surfing the Web
  • Encrypting the user’s connection, so usernames, passwords, credit card numbers and other confidential information remain safe
  • Providing the user with unlimited bandwidth on up to five devices

Cost per Victim Goes Down; Social and Mobile Incidents on the Rise.

Norton has just released the findings of its annual Norton Cybercrime Report. The study is designed to understand how cybercrime affects consumers, and how the adoption and evolution of new technologies impacts people’s security. All the findings were based on self-reported experiences involving more than 13,000 adults across 24 countries. The result is that the 2012 edition of the Norton Cybercrime Report calculates the direct costs associated with global consumer cybercrime at £69 billion over the past twelve months. In the UK it estimated that more than 12.5 million people were victim to cybercrime in the past twelve months, leading to £1.8 billion in direct financial losses.
