Property tax shortfall to impact on vehicle tax next year.

So you just bought a low –emission vehicle on the basis that your tax would be greatly reduced. You were right! There is a significant saving over higher emission vehicles, but I have bad news for you.

All that is about to change in the next budget if reports in the press over last weekend are anything to go by!

Seemingly it’s all down to the proposed property tax. Since it won’t be introduced now until at least mid 2013 there will be a shortfall in revenue to the government and this will be met by massive increases in motor tax and vehicle registration tax.

New tax to replace household charge

Reports have emerged that the new property tax to be introduced in place of the current household charge will hit the country’s city dwellers hardest. It will be based on the market value of homes which means that properties in Dublin and other large urban centres can expect to pay significantly more than, for example, large country houses in rural areas.

The news comes in the wake of the first household charge warning letters being sent out to hundreds of thousands of homeowners who have yet to register for the €100 household charge.

Sources have said that the new tax is expected to be self assessed which means that owners could be liable for auditing by the Revenue Commissioners.

A spokesperson for the Household Charge Project Board said the first communiqué issued was to draw people’s attention to the fact that they are not registered on the database. It also reminds recipients of the legislation requiring payment and that they will incur further late payment charges if they do not register and pay.

The new property tax, which has been described by the government as ‘fair’, is based on market value and could mean that small terraced houses in the capital would incur a much higher charge than larger properties in less densely populated areas of Ireland.

It gives a new meaning to the word ‘Fair’!

Voice and Language software firm to create over 40 jobs

Nuance Communications has announced that it intends to set up its international headquarters in Dublin. The voice and language solutions provider will create over 40 positions in sales, finance and human resources. This is seen as another important boost to the ailing Irish economy.

The company already employs over 10,000 people worldwide and its European customers include Europe Audi, Barclays, BMW, BT, Deutche Bank, The Office of the Irish Revenue Commissioners and Vodafone. Nuance Communications also maintains an imaging business with regional ties to manufacturers such as Canon, HP and Xerox.

Senior vice president and general manager of Nuance EMEA Neil Weston said: "Dublin provides Nuance with an excellent foundation for building on our deep experience and resources in Europe and supporting customers and partners across the region. We are pleased to be able to have an extensive, talented workforce in the region and to join the many premier, multinational technology companies that call Ireland home."

Ireland’s Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton said that it was part of the Government's plan for jobs and growth to target sectors where Ireland had particular strengths and to build clusters of companies in those areas. In recent years ICT has been a major success story, and he believed that the challenge was to leverage major international companies already in operation here to attract further investment.

Figures just released show that the government is ahead of target for its ‘tax take’ up to the end of May. It pulled in €14.4bn which was 2.8 per cent higher than forecast.

One interesting piece of news was that May showed a budget surplus of €603 million bringing this years overall budget deficit to €6.53bn.

This resulted in the cost of servicing the national debt falling by €111 million to just under €4bn.

However before we all get to excited, this is still €1.95bn higher than at the same time last year.

Three of the four big taxes were all ahead of budget at the end of May. In particular:

  • Income Tax up by 3.1 per cent
  • Corporation Tax by 17.8 per cent, although this is due to a change in how it is calculated.

The current budget deficit of €6.53bn compares to €10,23bn for the same period last year. However the reason for this is largely due to savings made on the Anglo-Promissory note which accounts for €3.5bn of this difference.

Overall the Governments tax take up to the end of May is €386 million ahead of target.
