New technology will allow accelerated expansion into new markets
Galway-based KPW Print has announced an investment in Xerox Colour 1000 and Nuvera 144 digital printing presses with a view to increasing its digital print output and expansion into new market sectors. The company also installed Xerox Freeflow and XMPie uDirect Personalisation software to maximise productivity and utilize the full potential of the new devices.
Founded in 1949, KPW Print employs 33 staff and serves high profile customers in the life science, hospitality and public sectors. The company already offers a comprehensive service in the lithographic and digital market and believes these new investments will drive KPW’s continued expansion particularly within the hospitality and public sectors. In any given year they produce work for over 400 different customers, large and small, spread across a multitude of sectors.
Gabriel Naughton, General Manager of KPW Print said:
“We have a long tradition of delivering high-quality print jobs to a wide range of businesses such as medical device and pharmaceutical companies both international and indigenous. Typically the type of work we produce for these companies is leaflets and booklets and these would be done lithographically. We have however some major contracts with a number of large hotel groups in Ireland and the UK who use a lot of sales and marketing material. This by its very nature is short run print and is ideal for digital. The balance of our main business is with the public sector which is an area the company wants to expand further.
Naughton went on to say that this new investment more than doubles KPW Print’s full colour digital print capacity and moves them into a new league in terms of print quality and the ability to offer personalised print and cross-media solutions He hopes that the new technology will help them continue to grow their digital business.
In order to increase output in terms of both volume and quality, KPW consulted with a number of manufacturers before opting for Xerox, having been impressed by their technology and comprehensive installation, training and service package.
“The installation was very well planned and executed by Xerox and we were up and running on both machines within two days,” added Naughton. “We received three full days of training with another two days training planned. However we are already at a point close to full operational level on the whole system.”
Speaking on the deal, Norman McNellis, Business Manager Graphic Arts Xerox, Ireland said: “Xerox offers the right blend of equipment; workflow and business development tools which help our customers focus on their core business. Our aim is to help print companies such as KPW grow their businesses by automating workflows which drives efficiencies and reduces costs enabling them to focus on serving their existing customers and winning new clients.”
Naughton added a final footnote. “One of the reasons we invested in new digital technology in terms of brand recognition and turnover is that we want to be seen over the next three to five years as one of the top ten print companies in Ireland doing a mix of work but with a significant presence in the three sectors already mentioned.”

Printed textile design graduates of the future
It was show time again as the 2012 NCAD (National College of Art & Design) Graduate & postgraduate Exhibitions took place at the college’s campus on Cork Street, Dublin 8 (June 9 - 17).
One of the highlights this year was the presentation from the printed textile design graduates who exhibited vision and creativity with a slick final year design show which was part of the NCAD exhibition.
Samantha Corcoran, Lecturer in Printed Textile Design (BA, ANCAD, and MFA NCAD) commented:
“These are the designers of the future and their work spans a range of contemporary print applications within womenswear, menswear and interiors,” said Corcoran.
Innovative print exploration and experimentation was evident from the students including multiprocessing techniques such as devore, digital, cross-dyeing and hand-painting, illumination, flock and foil.
“This year we’ve developed our Mimaki TX2 printer use to run both reactive and sublimatic inks,” continued Corcoran. “This transformation enables exciting digital exploration and prototyping across a broader range of contemporary substrates - natural and synthetics, enabling the students to be more creative and more experimental than ever before.”
Corcoran highlighted a number of graduates’ work, in particular Gerard Gunning, who she described as a ‘brave and innovative designer’ who has already secured an internship with Paul Smith in the UK.
Gunning’s final year work, a menswear collection, explores life, anonymity and censorship creating an edgy, contemporary look, fusing sports and casual wear. Innovative fabric manipulation, bonding, illumination, devore, cross dye and exploration across materials without boundaries was evident in his pieces with a mi
nimal, graphic feel to the final work.Niamh Burgess explored a cool and contemporary underwater concept within her womenswear collection. Hits of neon’s and brights fuse and mingle with metallic bubbles, pearl and aqua shades. Intricate, technological sea creatures emerge from a coral underworld. Burgess pushed her concept further with the use of specialised pearlised glitters, foils, and fluorescent and neon pigments. Corcoran said it was ‘a beautiful, original collection with on-trend colour approaches’.
Another graduate, Clodagh Carroll, created a striking contemporary womenswear collection of hand-painted florals drifting across devore silhouettes. Corcoran added: ”Painterly digital silks’ mingling with ghostly transparent sublimatic scarves was how I would describe this work.”
Erin McLure’s womenswear collection oozed sophistication and style. Using the limestone landscape and flora of the burren as inspiration, hand-drawn and hand-printed craftsmanship was evident across this work. The traditional screen print process is intermixed with a more technological digital exploration. A contemporary reinterpretation of the ‘Made in Ireland’ concept!
Corcoran concluded:
“If these designers are the future, the future is certainly bright”.

Select Digital Print’s new website reflects the company’s commitment to “excellence in print and customer service”. The redesign aims to ensure customers and potential clients find buying print easy, accessible and stress free.
The company, based in Dublin, is a multi award-winning Irish print house with accolades including the 2010 and 2011 Large Format Digital Print Awards and the 2004, 2005 and 2006 Irish Print Awards.
Select Digital produces a wide range of products including stationery, print marketing, signage and display, promotional print and bespoke print for award ceremonies, furniture, wall coverings and much more.
Tara Wilson-Black, managing director, explained the background to this new website: “A key word we use on the new site is ethical. By that I mean everybody has to get a slice of the pie. The customer has to win by getting a quality printed product at an ethical cost. Select Digital has to make a margin and if there is an ad agency or creative person in the middle they have to win as well. That’s the premise we work on here. With five Irish print awards under our belt we are definitely the market leader when it comes to digital print.
“The new website has been designed to showcase that because I honestly don’t think there is another print house that can offer the variety of products we do both small and large format such as printing on furniture. That’s unique in itself. So we push the barriers and make people think outside the box of what they can do and achieve with print. We built the new website because I genuinely felt the original one didn’t do justice or highlight the colourful work that we produce. When customers visited that previous site I don’t they fully grasped the extent of what we did?” said Wilson-Black.
Select Digital took over 150 photographs for the new site and also simplified the process of navigation.
“There is also advice on the new website,” she added. “So for example if you want a ‘Tent card’ we tell you the benefits of what using a Tent card in your business will be. If someone is thinking of doing a ‘Shell Scheme’ at an exhibition or event we show them a blank one first and then one with graphics on it so that they can see the advantages of using a Shell Scheme. Most other sites don’t do that.”
The new Select Digital website was a challenge which Wilson-Black said required unwavering focus, determination and professionalism
She concluded: The result is a website that showcases the quality of our work, the satisfaction of our clients, and some of our cool working atmosphere and personality.”

Think Contemporary is an interior & furniture design company based in Dublin. When working on any project it always tries to incorporate second hand and vintage furniture modifying it where possible. To achieve really unique pieces Think Contemporary came up with the idea of applying images to the furniture. Researching this concept it found Select Digital and they suggested using vinyl printing as the medium. The company’s furniture has received international press and has been used in residential and commercial settings.

Reads Design & Print – one of Ireland’s leading print providers – has recently invested in two further Mimaki CJV30-100 integrated printer/cutters in response to increasing demand for wide format printed output. The two new machines were supplied by authorised Mimaki reseller, Complete Digital and have been installed in Reads’ Dublin city centre and Sandyford branches.
Mimaki CJV30 printer/cutters similar to Reads’ machine are available in four widths ranging from 60 cm to 1.6 metre and deliver a combination of high print quality, a broad range of outdoor durable ink types (including white and metallic) coupled to excellent productivity with their unattended, print-and-cut capabilities. Dave Rainsford, General Manager, Ireland for Mimaki’s distributor, Hybrid Services Ltd, is naturally very pleased with Reads’ investment. “I'm delighted that both branches are now Mimaki partners and that Reads’ continued investment in our solutions is delivering such considerable advantages.”
The company said that both branches have benefited greatly since investing in the Mimaki machines, having purchased three in the last eight months to cater for increasing levels of business. Gary O’Reilly – general manager of the Setanta Centre branch added: “With the extremely high volume of work we receive through our corporate sectors along with general day-to-day trade, we needed a very good response to help us cope with the increased demand. Our continued investment in Mimaki hardware has provided us with a perfect solution.”
“The printed vinyl and posters produced by the machines are excellent. At Reads Design & Print we seek to couple excellent value with the delivery of an extremely high standard of quality - especially on our large format print work.”

ALS Labelling Solutions claims its latest label applicator systems – ALS FastPaq – is one of the world’s fastest. Running at over 300m per minute, the applicator supplies accurate labelling through extreme product speed changes and production stoppages.
ALS, in Mulhuddart, Dublin, is a leading European supplier and manufacturer of high quality labelling systems, consumables and accessories, including label applicators, print and apply systems and thermal transfer printers.
Pat Phibbs, general manager, ALS, outlined the sectors the new applicator would appeal to: “The target market for this new applicator is the label printing industry where they want to over label as part of the production process,” he said. “In the past the printer had to slow down his press speed because there just wasn’t an over label machine solution to match his label printing machines speed. Typical applications would be where there is a re-sealable tab put on a label as it’s being produced or a sequential bar code which has been printed off line and they need to apply it on line sequentially. Because the ALS FastPaq can run at this incredible speed it means there is now no production downtime for the printer which is a significant saving in itself.”
ALS focuses mainly on supplying labelling solutions to manufacturing end users particularly the food and drink, pharmaceutical and animal feed sectors as well as general manufacturing. It supplies print and apply, print only and apply only products to these sectors.
“Our main machine supplier is Avery Dennison and ALS is the sole distributor in Ireland for their range of labelling systems,” added Phibbs. “However we customise these machines specifically for the end user here depending on the application required. Our range of customers includes many well-known blue chip brands such as Glanbia, P&G, Baileys, Oral-B, Pepsi to name just a few.”
Phibbs said ALS had come a long way in the past five years.
“It culminated in the company winning the SFA (Small Firms’ Association) ‘outstanding small business award 2011’ which was a huge honour for the company.”
The main printing process employed in all ALS’s printing machines is thermal whereby the thermal printer prints on paper (or some other material) by melting a coating of ribbon so it stays glued to the material on which the print is applied.
“ALS also supplies high quality consumables such as labels and ribbons,” said Phibbs. “These are essential for reliable machine performance that will enhance the performance/reliability and life span of our clients’ equipment. Another large part of our business is service, maintenance and spares.”
