Mimaki JV33-160 to assist the company’s

growth naturally and help sustain it into 2014.

Mimaki JV33-160Mimaki JV33-160Dublin based Select Digital Print Group has announced that it will install a Mimaki JV33-160 before the end of October. This is the third investment in a Mimaki large format printer by this multi-award winning print house and will be used to improve productivity and shorten lead times. In tandem with this, the company has also installed a Canon iPF8300 specifically for pop-up display units, pull-ups, posters and backlit, Duratran film.

Learn about making profit in new market areas is the theme.

PaperlinX Discover PaperlinX Discover PaperlinX Ireland-Robert Horne Group, a leading supplier of paper, packaging, plastics, vinyl and visual technology solutions to the Irish market is hosting a ‘Discovery’ event at its Dublin premises on the 23rd and 24th October. The open days have been designed to show customers how they can make profit in new market areas.

A Tough Beginning But A Wild Ride!

Tara Wilson-BlackTara Wilson-BlackThis month Select Digital celebrates 10 years in business and what a rollercoaster ride it's been!

In 2003 I took the brave decision to start up my own print business. I applied for a capital grant with my local Enterprise Board and was turned down. Not to be defeated I appealed the decision and was offered instead an employment grant. Although it wasn't the ideal outcome - (I still needed the capital to purchase vital print and finishing equipment) - it did ease the pressure in that it enabled me to concentrate on finding those resources.

In the end I had to re-mortgage the family home, something the banks don't like doing. If the business had failed, we would have found ourselves homeless. Undeterred and determined I released some equity from our home and purchased my kit.

This consisted of a HP Designjet, Electric cutter, Seal Laminator, Javelin cutting bench and a Mimaki JV3, all of which are still operational today. The Mimaki JV3 was instrumental to building and growing my business. What I failed to mention was that I was the first person in Ireland to purchase one and in essence became the guinea pig for the Irish market. Although the JV3 was being used in the UK this was the first time it was installed in a premises in Ireland. Having operated various digital print machines in the past, Encad, Mutoh and a Raster Graphics Arizona, I didn't think the Mimaki would pose much trouble as it was/is a fine piece of machinery. How naïve I was. At the time I am sure Gerry McGivern and Doug in Millers would quiver when my name flashed on their mobiles.

During that first year we had teething problems with the machine, from banding to colour management. In fairness Millers were always at hand to assist and support and it's a shame the company is not in existence today. Millers, like many others became a causality of the economic crisis that hit the print industry particularly hard.

In 2004 Select Digital won its first Irish Print Award for Digital Print. What followed was a succession of Print Awards until 2006 when we took a break and did not enter for a few years (we felt it only fair to give someone else a shot at winning!). In 2006 I won the Young Print Manger of The Year Award and South Dublin Female Of The Year Award – I had arrived. By the end of that year we had outgrown our premises in Whitestown Business Park, so it was time to look for BIGGER premises to house our growing client base and kit. An opportunity arose early in 2007 to purchase premises in Southcity Business Park and we jumped at the chance. Once in, we set about designing our offices and work space to suit our expanding client needs and requirements.

This hub has now become the Select Digital HQ in Southcity Business Park, a hive of activity. To keep up with the demand for large format digital print in 2008 we added a Mimaki JV33, such was the velocity of print. We printed for signage companies, exhibition companies, design agencies, advertising agencies to name but a few, and were/are their secret weapon. Quality digital print is in our DNA, it's the foundation to which Select Digital is built upon along with honesty and integrity. The company prides itself in being an ethical business with a corporate social responsibility for the community we work in. This is reflected in the "Charitable Giving" campaigns we have participated in over the years.

SELECT DIGITAL PRINT GROUPSELECT DIGITAL PRINT GROUP

In 2009 we set about further expansion and added small format digital print to our list of services. Prior to this, Select Digital specialized in large format, signage and display. Our customers demand for short run, small format digital prompted us to go in this direction. It simply complimented our existing services.

A Xerox was installed and we set about offering both large and small format digital print to our clients. Again growth caught us unawares; our quest for perfection led to the installation of a Konica Minolta Developer press 7000+ in 2011. 2012 was another great year for investing money in Select with the installation of a new booklet maker and binding machine along with a massive investment in building a NEW website. This was designed to showcase our products, services, achievements and talent in a more favorable manner but most importantly, it had to "reach" more potential clients and be fully search engine optimized. Our existing website was out dated and simply didn't perform in the Google statistics, nor was it directing potential clients to find us. 2012 was all about re-inventing Select and showcasing it in a way that would entice potential clients to do business with us. We succeeded, and that year Select became the print media partner for Dublin Web Summit, the largest technology conference in Europe. 8 Kilometers of digital print from a media card to exhibition, signage and display graphics came through our doors, on time and with the quality and expertise clients come to expect from Select. This was our biggest challenge and event to date and we delivered flawless graphics on time and on schedule.

A video of Dublin Web Summit can be found here: https://vimeo.com/52321112.

2012 was also the year we added video to our web site to showcase our work and client testimonials. This has been a huge success as potential customers get a clear indication of what they can expect when they partner with Select Digital for their projects.

Our client testimonial video can be found here: https://vimeo.com/54294222

Today Select Digital employs seven people directly or through contract and the team are growing. If the truth be known I'd say our competitors and some suppliers gave us 2/3 years max. We've outlived some of those competitors and suppliers. Today if you asked me why Select Digital is so successful, I'd say it's because of our attention to detail and our ethical approach to business.

My top tips for success would be as follows:

LOVE WHAT YOU DO
Love what you do. Do it with passion or not at all. When you go into business doing something you love, success is imminent. If you love what you do, your passion for the business will drive you to be knowledgeable, creative and persistent. On the other hand, if your feeling for what you do is lukewarm, your success will be too.

DELIVER ON YOUR PROMISES
Always deliver on your promises, never let a customer down. A customer will remember the one time you let them down, over the 10 times you saved their bacon and got them out of a hole. Don't let that one time be the way the customer remembers you.

INVEST IN YOUR BUSINESS
Invest in your business, yourself, your ideas and your staff. We are always on the lookout for anything that will make running our business easier. Be it a new printer, booklet maker, updated software or person. It could be an extra pair of hands. Re-investing profits into our business is not only tax efficient it makes our job a lot easier.

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH SUPPORTIVE PEOPLE
It is so important to surround yourself with positive people who love, support, nourish, and encourage you. People who believe in you will lift you higher. If you surround yourself with big dreamers and creators, the results will be exponential.

BE FEARLESS
Be Your Own Hero. Don't wait around for a capital grant or your Fairy Godmother to arrive. Chances are she's too busy with people who have the balls to follow their dreams. Too many people I talk to are afraid to try doing what they love, because they are afraid they are no good, will make a mistake, or that they're not ready yet. Experiment in your quest for greatness and when you make a mistake, just keep going. Forget all the reasons why it won't work and believe the one reason why it will. You haven't failed until you quit trying! Captain your own ship, the universe favours the brave.

NETWORK
Walk into a room and see friends not strangers. In 2006 I set up Irish Women In Business, an online forum for like minded business women like myself to network, share resources, advice and exchange business contacts. Network, network, network – grow your contacts list and your business. Make an effort to go to social events, at least two a month and stand back and watch your business grow. Most importantly when networking ask, ”How Can I Help You?”,prior to expecting leads. Offer your services, your advice and your time. Networking is not a single transaction, both parties need to benefit.

PROMOTE WHAT YOU LOVE
Promote what you love rather than bashing what you hate. PR & Marketing is essential to any successful business. Promote the things you love about your business. Right now I'm loving celebrating a decade in print and you are reading about it. Need I go on?

GROW YOUR BUSINESS ORGANICALLY
Use internal funds to expand your business, it might take longer to grow your business, persevere and the results in the end will be worth it. I was able to guide and lead the business according to the strategic goals of the business and technology over the years. As a result we have few financial worries and a little more security. Set monthly goals and targets, when you achieve them, reward yourself and your staff.

WORK LIFE BALANCE
All work and no play makes Jill a dull girl. Just as I choose to set up a business I also choose to get married and have children. I have to take that responsibility seriously. Most weekends you will find me running for charity with my family cheering me on at the finish line. Keeping physically fit, helps my mental wellbeing and contributes to being able to keep up with the fast pace of the digital world. At the weekends I try not check my e-mail, the time I spend with my family and friends is "quality time". I work around my children's schooling, often attending meetings during the day. You need to be clear about what your priorities are. Taking time out to know what you truly value, and making sure your behaviour reflects that, is important.

BE HONEST, ALWAYS.
I cannot stress how important this is. People will try to cheat you, business aint all sunshine and rainbows. It can be a very mean and nasty place. That does not mean you have to participate, you have a choice. Be honest with every person you come into contact with, both customer and supplier. Honesty and integrity are genuine humble characters to have in business and when you have these qualities clients will seek you out and WANT to do business with you. Like attracts like.

Select Digital has also raised money for a number of charities over the years. The Irish Cancer Society, Beaumount Hospital Foundation and Debra Ireland are just some of the charities to benefit from Select Digital's charitable giving campaigns. Finally we would like to thank our suppliers and customers for their continued support and we look forward to working with you long into the future. With 6 Irish Print Awards to date, Select Digital is one of Ireland's leading and progressive digital print houses. So thank you to everyone who has contributed to Select Digital's success. We are simply gaining momentum, gathering speed and strength to bring fourth into the future.

Xerox Ireland transfers all functions

to new organization.

IBS, a Xerox CompanyIBS, a Xerox CompanyIt has just been announced that Xerox Ireland has transferred its direct sales, marketing, service delivery; technical customer service and billing operations to Cork based Irish Business Systems (IBS), a XEROX company, effective March 1st 2013.

IBS was founded in 1972 by group managing director, Mr. Jerry Carey, and is a managed print services provider of digital imaging and printing solutions with customer service and support centres in Cork, Dublin, Belfast, Derry, Galway, Laois and Galway.

Carey explained a little of the background to the decision.

“Just over three years ago Xerox Europe acquired IBS”, he said.  “Historically we had been the Konica Minolta distributer in Ireland and at that stage IBS probably mirrored in many ways what Xerox Ireland did. Both companies would have been involved with a number of the same customers and whilst IBS was strong in the SME and Public services sectors, Xerox began to consider if it would be beneficial to have just one company go to market with all the Xerox products based in a single location.”

Jerry Carey group managing director of IBSJerry Carey group managing director of IBSThe two companies were integrated at the beginning of March with the entire decision making and management structure now located at IBS’s headquarters.

“All of our service delivery is now handled out of Cork,” continued Carey. “As you know, up until this new development, the back office function, call handling and accounts were run from outside the country, one situated in the Philippines, the other in Bangalore, India. So these jobs have now come back into Ireland, North and South which has increased the headcount by 25 people.”

IBS believes that this has now created a ‘one stop shop’ for all of the graphic market countrywide which includes a dedicated team in Northern Ireland under Norman McNelis, Production Systems Director. All supplies, spare parts etc for the new operation are being held in Belfast and Cookstown Industrial Estate, Dublin.

“This has streamlined the whole supply, spare parts and engineering functions,” added Carey “There are 83 engineers now employed which has beefed up the support to our customers. This was one of the main objectives of the exercise. Another critical point to make is that all jobs have been retained and over twenty new positions generated.”

Xerox’s consumable division will still remain a separate business and has not been transferred as part of the new arrangement. The restructured IBS organization will continue to go to market through Xerox re-sellers, partners and direct to end users.

Showroom facilities are based in Cookstown, Dublin and also widely available from IBS partners.

Carey cited a number of other reasons for creating a ‘one direct to market’ Xerox Company.

“We were duplicating and outsourcing a lot of the back up”, he said. “For example, all logistics for Xerox were outsourced while IBS did have a logistic department and also warehousing facilities. Because Xerox owned IBS it obviously made more sense to utilise these facilities. The second point relates to the service end of things. Integrating all the service engineers into one system means that we can deliver more effectively because, for example, IBS may have had an engineer in Donegal but Xerox Ireland didn’t. There was also duplication of roles in other regions of the country, so this change has eliminated all of that. Another important issue is that there will be 300 people in the new organization which definitely will deliver economy of scale; therefore creating one company to handle Xerox Ireland was the obvious choice.”

This is an interesting development by Xerox in the Irish print market and one which will undoubtedly make IBS a force to be reckoned with going forward.

Outdated working practices impacting on

the delivery of high quality education services.

Chas Moloney director Ricoh UK and IrelandChas Moloney director Ricoh UK and IrelandResearch published by Ricoh Ireland has revealed that the education sector is lagging behind all other industries due to out of date working practices, and is struggling to keep up with the pace of technology-led change. 88 per cent of those surveyed within educational institutions across Europe, including Ireland, said the way they work is out of date. These respondents confirmed that this prevents them from being as effective and efficient as they could be, an issue which is having a major impact on their ability to effectively deliver high quality education services.

"With teachers and students increasingly expecting modern, mobile learning environments, it's crucial the Irish education sector is able to keep up with new technologies and ways of working," says Chas Moloney, director, Ricoh UK and Ireland. "Increasingly, educational institutions are competing on the basis of efficiency, value for money, and the quality of student services, all of which can be enhanced through technology if it is properly integrated and used throughout an organisation."

One interesting statistic from the report highlighted that with 89 per cent of education sector respondents being impacted by mobile working, the sector is under pressure to adopt new technologies to support this. However, it pointed out that new mobile devices alone are not the answer to enhanced information sharing. 77 per cent of respondents said that while they have access to some of the latest devices their use is being hindered by back end legacy systems, many of which are not fully capable of embracing mobile technologies like smartphones and tablets to improve document workflows. The report stated that without these devices properly integrated with document workflows, employees find it difficult to share information effectively on the move, update student records in real time or securely submit information back to the network. This results in potential duplication of effort and security breaches.

Another concern is that more than two thirds of those taking part in the survey said they are investing in new technologies before fully realising the functionality of existing devices. With budgets under increasing pressure, the report stressed it is vital that educational institutions ensure they make the most of the existing technologies available to them with proper systems and workflows in place to benefit from their full functionality before deciding to invest in new equipment and devices.

"There is little benefit to buying new technology if it is not fully integrated within a school or university's network, with staff able to access and process information, and share knowledge, in the right format, at the right time. For this to happen, organisations need to review their technology and document processes in tandem to ensure they are working together to support business objectives," added Moloney.

"For the education sector, optimised document processes mean classroom staff can be more productive and spend time delivering a richer learning experience, instead of spending valuable time finding and archiving records and documents."

The research, the Ricoh Document Governance Index, was conducted on behalf of Ricoh by Coleman Parkes Research. It reveals the extent to which new technologies are impacting the way businesses in Europe - including educational institutions - are managing information, including the business critical document processes that underpin everything from operations such as finance, HR and procurement to student records and admissions applications.

Ricoh study reveals

it isn't taking advantage of other cloud benefits.

Chas Moloney director Ricoh UK and IrelandChas Moloney director Ricoh UK and IrelandResearch published by Ricoh Europe reveals the public sector in Europe is the industry most likely to use cloud technologies for document sharing, but 52 per cent of senior public sector employees say it has made managing documents more difficult. The survey was carried out across Europe, including Ireland.

"It seems the public sector is not maximising the benefits of cloud computing, including easier access to information, increased knowledge sharing and improved business agility. This could be due to disconnected document processes, where the process, the technology, and the way people work are viewed in isolation instead of as equal parts that need to work seamlessly together," says Chas Moloney, director, Ricoh UK and Ireland.

The study shows that 47 per cent of public sector organisations use the cloud to share documents, and 71 per cent use it to enable mobile access to documents. But while those in the public sector recognise that new technologies can help them to more effectively serve their citizens, in the majority of cases (69 per cent), investments are being made in new technology before the functionality of existing systems is fully realised.

"With the public sector focused on delivering high quality services, it's important that document processes are helping it to engage effectively with the public it serves, with accurate information being shared between departments in a secure and effective way. Increasingly, the sector is being expected to share information in an electronic format, with the cloud able to play a central role in the migration of documents from paper to digital. By working with an expert in document management to make the transition, the public sector can be confident that information will be accessible when it's needed, in the right format; with technology supporting, rather than hindering, the flow of information," continued Moloney.

"One of the particular challenges the public sector faces is striking a balance between making information accessible, both to employees and to the public, and protecting confidential details. Regular reviews of document processes in the sector will help identify potential risks and opportunities to improve the sharing of information in a secure way," he added.

RICOH logoRICOH logoOther key findings include:

* 83 per cent of those in the public sector say they have access to some of the latest devices, such as smartphones and tablets, but their use is being hindered by back-end legacy systems.

* There is a divide between technologies provided to the front office and back office, resulting in potential bottlenecks, duplication of effort, delays in accessing real-time information and security risks.

* 83 per cent of public sector employees say they are being held back by outdated working practices that prevent them from being as effective and efficient as they could be.

* While 52 per cent say their information security is better now than in 2009, only 44 per cent could confirm their document processes are secure, with the public sector consequently exposed to risks from data leaks.

The research, the Ricoh Document Governance Index 2012, conducted on behalf of Ricoh by Coleman Parkes Research, reveals the extent to which new technologies are impacting the way businesses in Europe manage information, in particular the business critical document processes that underpin operations such as finance, HR and procurement. Organisations surveyed were based within the education, legal, utilities/energy, healthcare, public sector, retail, manufacturing and financial services sectors. The research reveals that, faced with the challenges of an increasingly paperless society and mobile workforce, managing these processes within and between public sector organisations is becoming increasingly complex.
