L - R Conor Power Sales Rep PFE and Martin McKeown from the Dargan PressL - R Conor Power Sales Rep PFE and Martin McKeown from the Dargan PressPrint and Finishing Equipment Ltd (PFE) recently held a tradeshow in the Hilton Templepatrick Belfast on the 15th of November in conjunction with Wildcard Software Ltd and Neopost Ireland Ltd.

As part of the promotion for the event a prize of an IPAD was up for grabs on the day which was won by Martin McKeown from the Dargan Press in Newtownabbey, Co. Antrim.

Yvonne Maguire, Marketing Assistant at PFE said the event was a huge success and it was great to see customers from both the print and sign industry attend on the day.

“PFE’s main showcase machine on the day was the Roland LEJ-640 UV Printer,” commented Maguire. “Customers were very interested in the effectiveness of the prints we demonstrated and how fast they were printed. We felt there was a great response from those who took time to look at the machine on the day. We also took along with us the Roland SOLJET PRO III XC-540. It too gained a lot of interest. PFE also demonstrated various pieces of Duplo equipment - collators, booklet makers, vacuum fed folders and creasers. Again a lot of interest was shown by visitors at the Duplo stand. We also had representatives from both Roland and Duplo attend the show on the day.”

Alex with Mimaki Cjv30-130Alex with Mimaki Cjv30-130Adventure Branding Limited, based in Knockmitten Lane, Dublin 12 has recently installed a Mimaki CJV30-130 printer as part of an upgrade programme to enhance the company’s production capabilities in order to match their increase in business.

Adventure Branding's buildingAdventure Branding's buildingEstablished over twelve years ago by Roy Tucker, Adventure Branding specialises in branding of all shapes and sizes, from vehicle branding and wrapping to extensive building or shopping centre wrapping. The company was established with one goal in mind: to provide a highly visual, quality-driven service from day one. Key to this was Adventure Branding’s determination to ensure that it was distinctive among other wrapping and signage companies by ensuring that all elements were produced within its custom-built premises including logistics, project management, design, print and fit. A full team of experts, including professional designers and fitters, who have over 20 years of experience in wrapping vehicles and buildings, as well as fitting signage was also critical in eliminating the potential problems and headaches that can sometimes be a part of the branding process.

Alex Tucker joined the company in 2005 to drive the business forward using his sales and marketing experience gained from 15 years working in the printing trade and FMCG.

The company has a very high profile and distinctive branding presence of its own, with many vehicles in the Dublin area wrapped in its corporate leopard-print design.

Recently the brothers decided that they needed to upgrade one of their wide format printers which they feared was holding back the company’s progress, so they looked to the market to see what the latest printing technologies had to offer to their business.   Although they considered remaining with their existing supplier, they were open to other options and engaged experienced Mimaki reseller Reprocentre for advice.

Adventure Branding carAdventure Branding carProduction features on the award-winning Mimaki CJV30 such as the single handed clutch loading of the media, in-built cleaning and maintenance and a first-class speed / quality ratio made the decision making process easy, according to Alex, who commented: “We’ve had the Mimaki for two months now and it’s been running 24/7 without missing a beat. We’re delighted with the move to a Mimaki printer and it’s transformed the way Adventure Branding work.”

The uninterrupted ink supply system on the Mimaki is another feature that Alex focuses on as making a difference to how his company operates, allowing overnight printing during the increasingly busy spells that he’s experiencing. “We’ve had a number of large jobs in of late and it’s helped us meet some short delivery times. With the powered take-up unit it’s been satisfying to know the Mimaki’s working away for us, producing high quality work into the night. The company has gone from strength to strength and currently employs up to 11 people.”

EmblemEmblem

Geometrics Ltd has expanded its warehousing facility to enable the company to increase and develop its range of media available for the Solvent and Dye Based digital printing market.

The warehouse, which is based in the Clonshaugh Industrial Estate, Dublin 17 is easily accessible due to its proximity to the M1 and M50 motorways. The operation of the facility allows for orders to be dispatched for next day delivery country wide or alternatively customers have the choice to collect from the warehouse itself.

Geometrics can now offer a wide range of vinyl’s, including Grey back permanent glue, Grey back removable glue, Matt Vinyl, and a new Post it Vinyl (180µ post it glue for easy application and removal) with matching over Laminate, Gloss, Satin or Matt.

Fergus Byrne, MD of Geometrics said that the new Post it Vinyl is particularly useful for sending out graphics which the end user can then apply without any special skill and without the fear of wrinkles due to it’s heavier weight.

“For a commitment to 50 rolls of vinyl over a period of time we are able to offer clients customised vinyls!” he stated. “100µ or 180µ etc with a light glue, strong glue, grey glue, post-it-adhesive are now all available.”

The main product range which Geometrics supply is the Emblem range of media which the company source directly from the Dataplot manufacturing plant based in Germany.

Byrne said that Geometrics have a long standing business relationship with Dataplot and feel that the diverse specialized range of products offered by them will be of interest to many of the Display companies operating in Ireland.

“A good example of this was when Jens Wilke from Dataplot recently visited some of the Display companies around Dublin,” said Byrne. “He found a lot of interest in the Emblem Fire Retardant Banner materials which we are able to offer.”

In addition to the extra media carried, Geometrics are now also supplying stretcher bars for canvas into the fine art digital printing market.

Byrne concluded:

“With over 3,000 (100 boxes of 30) stretcher bars in stock ranging from 8”  to  60” Geometrics are in place to cater for the usual Christmas rush of Canvas prints from the high street retailer.”

Seren Deeb, Kyma Deeb, Pierce Ivory & Nyssan Deeb with their Irish Print Awards plaquesSeren Deeb, Kyma Deeb, Pierce Ivory & Nyssan Deeb with their Irish Print Awards plaques

Dublin city-based printer GP Digital and the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) walked off with the biggest prize in Irish Printing when they won the ‘Print of the Year’ 2011 award at the 34th Irish Print Awards ceremony held this year in Dublin’s Clontarf Castle Hotel on Thursday, 1st December 2011.

With 17 category winners to choose from, the judges choose “Night Prayer” from the ”Book Printing” category as the overall winning entry. GP Digital and NCAD took the top honours in this category which was sponsored by The Reprocentre.

The awards recognise and reward the quality of design, printing and finishing involved in the production of a wide range of printed material, including newspapers, magazines, books and marketing collateral, as well as variable data print, print packaging, label printing and vehicle wraps.

We have talked before in Digital Print News about the synthesis of digital print and traditional print and the winning entry “Night Prayer” is typical of that collaboration at its highest level.

Night Prayer came about when Mary Plunkett, a research MA student in Visual Communications at NCAD decided to produce a modern, contemporary book on Night Prayer. Now add in the fact that the book would have digital print, litho as well as etchings and you can see the complexity of the project.

Nyssan Deeb, Director of GP Digital explained:

“It was GP Digital’s third year to enter the awards and the third year to receive a nomination,” she said. “It was very much a collaboration between Mary and GP Digital in that she did a section of the book which was letterpress with etchings involved and we did other sections which were printed on our Xerox 700 digital press.”

Deeb commented that the reason GP Digital was chosen as the printer by Plunkett had its origins when she attended the awards back in 2010.

“I was sitting beside Sean Sills, print tutor at the NCAD and explained to him what we did. I gave him my card and he obviously passed on the details to a number of students. When Mary approached us this year with her project it involved a lot of discussion about what type of stocks would be suitable for a mixture of digital and litho work. So it wasn’t just a matter of receiving a file and going to print.”

The production of the book, from concept and design through to finished product, spanned a two year period. It comprises of 142 pages, printed on 175gsm Zerkall mould-made acid free paper with the text pages digitally printed by GP Digital on its Xerox 700 press. All of the letterpress was printed by hand, as was all the gilding and the illustrations. The book has a hardback cover and is case bound. A total of 26 copies were finally produced.

Plunkett said she found GP Digital a terrific partner to work with.

“I had to select papers that worked with letterpress, digital and etching processes because I wanted to keep the paper constant throughout the book and they were a great help in terms of answering questions and supplying print samples and we were delighted with the quality of the end product.”

Nyssan added:

“The challenge for GP Digital was to ensure that the digital aspect of the project matched Mary’s requirements at every stage and I think the end result proved that we could do this.”

GP Digital was established in 2004, and today employs four people. A significant amount of their business is large-format printing and finishing and the remainder is small-format work which typically includes booklets, brochures, flyers leaflets and reports, along with the work they produce for NCAD students.

“Night Prayer” is being sold to private libraries and book collectors and half of the print run has been sold already, including a copy that has gone to the rare books section in Trinity College Dublin. Another copy was bought by the National Library and one has also been bought by the National Library of Visual Arts.

Xerox Ireland unveiled its new Xerox 770 digital colour printing press to members of the Irish print industry at the Real Business Live event held at Xerox Ireland headquarters in Ballycoolin, Dublin on Tuesday 22nd November.

Xerox commented that the new press can help print providers increase monthly print volume by expanding into applications such as photo books, direct-mail pieces, marketing materials and calendars.

A key feature of the Xerox 770 Digital Colour Press is the Automated Colour Quality Suite, a set of tools that handle colour management tasks with minimal operator involvement. Of particular interest to printers is that the press also prints on a range of stocks, including heavyweight, at the rated speed of 71 pages per minute, something Xerox feel offers users a significant competitive advantage in the marketplace.

Additional features of the Xerox 770 Digital Colour Press include:

  • Inline finishing – including face-trimmed saddle-stitched booklets, catalogues, punched documents, tri-fold brochures and photo specialty products.
  • Heavyweight stock capabilities – up to 300 gsm.
  • Industry colour standards – allows the press to accurately match the designer‘s intent with optimal quality by achieving Fogra VPS certification. The press also uses the Adobe® PDF Print Engine 2 and is licensed for Pantone® Plus.
  • Server options – meets the needs of specific print operations. Options for the Xerox 770 Digital Colour Press include Xerox FreeFlow® Print Server and EX Print Server powered by EFI Fiery.
  • Scanning and copying – automatic duplex copying and scanning of 600 x 600 dpi and offers a variety of scanning options such as scan-to-file PDF and paper handling up to A3 size.

Norman McNelis, High Volume Colour specialist for Xerox Ireland who spoke at the event said:

“The Xerox 770 Digital Colour Press incorporates all of the engineering expertise and market understanding that Xerox has accumulated, helping thousands of printers build successful digital printing businesses. It’s a production colour press with outstanding image quality, productivity, reliability and versatility.  It clocks in at 70 pages per minute – for all weights of coated and uncoated media (up to 300gsm) delivering faster turnaround on those high-quality, high-value jobs.”

McNelis also commented about the importance of the Xerox-unique Automated Colour Quality Suite of tools (ACQS).

“You can achieve consistent and accurate colour faster through automated colour management tools,” he said. “ACQS is available on all of Xerox’s Production Colour Presses. It will automate calibration and destination profile creation – replacing the previously long, manual tasks with faster, automated functions using Inline Spectrophotometer technology.”

With all this technology on board McNelis added that it can help printers capture a host of new applications efficiently and profitably as well as reduce turnaround times and costs.
