Power to see things differently
Canon Ireland officially launched its EOS 650D entry level 18.0 MP camera in the Radisson Blu hotel in Dublin on Monday 18th June.
The event, which was held in the hotel’s luxurious SKY suite, offered stunning panoramic views across the city and also coincided with Ireland’s last Euro 2012 match against Italy.
Canon’s theme for the night was the ‘power to see things differently’ and apart from the EOS 650D, a whole range of cameras and lens was on show.
DPNlive took the opportunity to talk with Philip Brady, Director and Head of Canon Ireland to get an overview from him on the evening’s events.
“It’s a double celebration really,” explained Brady. “We’re celebrating 25 years of EOS and we’re also sponsoring Euro 2012. What makes this year extra special is it’s the first time we have sponsored the tournament when Ireland has been involved. When the EOS range was first launched, it was aimed at the professional and the high-end enthusiast. In the last few years with the introduction of the EOS 300D and now the 650D we have a camera which covers all price points and satisfies all levels of enthusiasts from the entry level camera user right up to top end professional. The EOS 650D is a high-end entry level camera with video as do all our SLR cameras.”
Brady went on to say that worldwide Canon are leaders in the field of cameras with sales of the EOS series alone now standing at 50 million units since its launch 25 years ago and in terms of lenses the figure to-day stands at 70 million.
“Lenses are very important for Canon,” he added. “We have over 70 lenses which will suit all types of situations, portrait or long distance. Our cameras will cover just about any eventuality even for architects who have to take very specific shots.”
In Ireland Canon has increased its market share penetration although as Brady pointed out, in terms of sales, these are ‘holding’ but not ‘growing’.
“The EOS range is fantastic value for money,” continued Brady. “The features available in these cameras, particularly an entry level model with an 80 to 55 lens, are amazing and the cost is sub €500 .It’s a fantastic piece of kit. It will have video, 5fps (frames per second) and interchangeable lenses so if you buy into the camera lens system and want to upgrade, you can bring your lenses with you. So a 5D will also use the same lens as the entry level 650D.”
The new EOS 650D is now available throughout Ireland although a word of warning as Brady pointed out. Demand for new models normally outstrips supply for the first few months until production catches up. So don’t be surprised if you have to wait a little while longer to get your hands on the new EOS 650D.

Well nobody should be surprised that the organisers of Sign & Digital Ireland and Print Ireland have deferred this year’s exhibition until sometime in the future. After re-scheduling Sign & Digital UK to next year (April 30- May 2, 2013) it was just a matter of time before their Irish equivalent met the same fate.
However, although it’s being touted as due to ‘difficult economic reasons’, drupa and a raft of other exhibitions this year have also played their part in the decision.
What’s interesting in a statement just released by the company is that they are now asking YOU, the industry to advise them about a future suitable date for the event.
So please let them know either directly or through the comment box at the end of this article. Press release from Faversham House Group
The show team want your suggestions...
The Sign & Digital Ireland and Print Ireland team are after your suggestions on when the show should next be held.
The initial plans were to run the show in October 2012 but after feedback from both exhibitors and visitors with regards to the prolonged difficult economic climate, it was felt that a later date would be preferred.
Rudi Blackett, Event Director, said: “Although we have strong levels of commitment from exhibitors and positive feedback, the overall feeling is that a later date for the exhibition would be the sensible decision given the current financial situation. We look forward to seeing the industry’s suggestions”.
Dates will be announced once we have collated all comments and suggestions and so please let us know your thoughts by emailing the team at:

The return of Benny Landa to drupa 2012 certainly created a buzz with the introduction of his new printing innovation, nanography. However Landa's new printing process was not the only draw bringing visitors into the auditorium to see the Landa show. Israeli dancers 'Maria Kong' also created a buzz with their beautiful, colourfully dressed dancers performing 'The Dance for the Digital Age'.
The dance illustrated various historical milestones in printing, from water to the actual nanography being introduced at drupa by Landa Corporation. The group’s costumes were designed for the show by famous costume designer Miki Avni and printed on Mimaki textile printers. Avni is known for her theatrical flair and colourful and imaginative designs and it seems she found the Mimaki printers the ideal solution to give expression to her artistic desires.
Zohar Eshel–Acco, CEO of Maria Kong, praised the quality of the textile print produced on the Mimaki systems. "It’s very important that beautiful vibrant colours can be produced which don't fade when washed,” she said. “The fabrics are more durable, a definite requirement for our dancing costumes. In ‘The Dance for the Digital Age’ this was especially important to bring lively designs that complement our dancing act as well as the message of nanographic printing. Mimaki textile printers can print on various kinds of fabrics, giving Miki the freedom to create colourful and vibrant costumes that really add to our artistic performance.”
Mike Horsten from Mimaki added: "We are extremely proud to have been able to support and make a contribution to the Landa show.”
The dance was initially designed to be a warm-up for the audience while they were entering the Landa auditorium. However, news about the dancers travelled fast around drupa, and many attendees arrived early to see the performance.
'The Dance for the Digital Age' was a big hit at drupa,” continued Horsten. “Many are comparing their performance with a Cirque du Soleil act. We like to think the vibrancy of the fabrics used in their costumes contributed at least a small part to the overall success of both the dance act and the draw to the Landa show.”
Mimaki textile printers
Mimaki’s textile printer range includes the world’s fastest dye sublimation printer, capable of printing at 150 m2/h on transfer paper and direct to pre-treated polyester fabrics without the need for an interim transfer paper step which the company maintains does not compromise quality.
Its exclusive sublimation ink delivers vibrant colours, whether printing on transfer paper or direct-to-textile, which Mimaki said broadens the range of possibilities for both textile printers and their designer clients. In addition to polyester printing, Mimaki’s range of textile solutions includes printers and inks capable of printing to natural fabrics such as silk and cotton. The full range can be found by visiting Mimaki’s UK and Irish distributors’ website – www.hybridservices.co.uk/textile

There was no surprise about the recent announcement by Faversham House that it had taken the decision to move its new show, Digital Print UK, back to the autumn of 2013 at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham.
In a year of FESPA Digital, Sign & Digital and the daddy of them all, drupa 2012, the logic of introducing a brand new show on the digital print circuit was never a runner from the start.
The organisers, Faversham House, stated that they had taken on board “extensive feedback from exhibitors facing budget constraints in a drupa year”. They also said that they are confident of ensuring “considerable benefits for everybody” in moving the exhibition to the new date.
Rudi Blackett, Show Director for Digital Print UK, said: “The consistent feedback we’ve received is that there is a demand for a digital print-specific show that provides a ‘total show experience’. We want visitors to have a mix of advice, demonstrations and working applications – all in one place at one time to give real business value. All that’s changing now is the date, which is being moved to the autumn of 2013 which will also allow us more time to model the show to further suit exhibitor and visitor requirements. This will ensure considerable benefits for everybody.”
Chris Rushton, Sales Manager for Digital Print UK, said: “Companies that had made firm bookings for the event originally planned for September 2012 are being informed personally with appropriate communications. The change has been welcomed with a high level of reconfirmed support for the show that they see as a vital part of the UK printing industry next year. It will build on the successful Sign & Digital UK formula, which, once again in 2012, was a hugely popular event.”

HP will present a seminar on the growing opportunities available in micro-publishing made possible by digital printing at drupa 2012 in conjunction with the Creative Printers Network, an independent forum of professional labs using HP Indigo presses.
Digital printing has enabled a broad base of creative professionals (including professional photographers, designers and architects) to publish very high quality, colour books in runs as small as 50 - 300 copies. HP says this ability to print short-run, high-quality art books enables creators to show their work cost-effectively as well as generating high-value pages for print service providers (PSPs) by utilising examples of HP Indigo digital print quality.
"The aim of the seminar is to examine the nature and potential of micro-publishing; explain the workflow; look at the economic model and share best practice," said Rafael Kraus, EMEA Indigo photo segment manager, HP. "What is clear, however, is that micro-publishing is not a micro-market but a fast-expanding segment that serves a large audience. We hope that HP Indigo customers who are interested in addressing this opportunity will come to hear and learn from speakers who have found success in this area."
Speakers at the seminar include four industry experts from the publishing, printing and photography sectors - Yannick Bouillis, organiser of the Amsterdam Book Fair and Offprint Paris; Rémy Faucheux and Mathieu Charon, designer and editor at RVP Books; Thomas Freitag, CEO of Bubu, a print service provider from Switzerland and Thomas Hoepker, photographer and past president of Magnum Photos.
