Company to share stand with packaging partners,
ESKO, and CGS Publishing Technologies.
Roland DG has announced that it will participate at the Packaging Innovations exhibition being held at the NEC in Birmingham on 27th and 28th February 2013. The wide-format digital printer manufacturer will be sharing a stand with packaging partners, ESKO, and CGS Publishing Technologies. The company said visitors to the stand D4 in the Print Innovations section of the show will be able to experience first-hand the flexibility of Roland DG’s LEC- printer/cutter as well as the ORIS Flex Pack // Web contract proofing solution which Roland believes will revolutionise packaging prototyping and proofing.
Roland’s LEC-540 printer/cutter will be on show to demonstrate how easy it is to design and print visually stunning packaging prototypes. Unlike traditional prototyping and proofing systems which are slow and expensive, Roland DG maintains that the LEC series allows users to create realistic samples quickly and using virtually any material, including final production stock. There is an option to print mock-ups with white and gloss ink, and embossed effects on-demand which it says offers real versatility to the packaging sector and gives printers and design agencies the freedom to produce creative prototypes without increasing costs.
CGS Publishing Technologies new ORIS Flex Pack // Web Solution, which includes ORIS software and Roland’s VersaCAMM VS-series of printer/cutters, was exclusively developed by CGS as an on-demand alternative to legacy systems for packaging proofing. This package is a turnkey solution for flexible packaging proofing and mock-up production and is aimed at delivering significant savings on consumables with no compromise on the quality of the final product. Roland’s VS printer/cutter will be printing a range of prototypes on various materials using white and metallic inks live on the stand.
Steve Chappell, Packaging, Proofing & Industrial Labelling Business Manager at Roland DG commented: “We are delighted to be exhibiting at Packaging Innovations again this year with CGS and ESKO. At Roland, we believe wide-format print has an increasing role to play in the packaging sector and we are proud to be the printer manufacturer pioneering this change. We’ve had a brilliant response to the versatility of our LEC and VS series of printer/cutters so far, and we look forward to introducing the benefits to a new audience in Birmingham.”
Roland will also be running an exclusive competition for visitors to the stand with a grand prize for the eventual winner. Visitors who go to Stand D4 during the exhibition will be given more details about the competition.

Company scoops most pioneering piece of machinery award.
This years TROPHEX SHOW 2013, held in the Pavillion, NEC, Birmingham, UK (13th – 14th January) turned out to be a winner for Mimaki.
The Trophex award for the “Most Pioneering Piece of Machinery” was presented to Mimaki’s UK & Irish distributor, Hybrid Services Ltd, for the Mimaki UJF-3042HG. This follows its successful release and subsequent market take-up in the last year.
The Mimaki UJF-3042HG is an A3 UV LED printer which has all the productive features of its close relation, the Mimaki UJF-3042FX, but with the added flexibility of an increased head height of 150mm, allowing printing onto an almost limitless range of products.
Mimaki maintains that its desktop LED UV printers have pioneered their way in the personalisation and gift market with the capacity to print high quality images direct to rigid substrates while at the same time delivering cost-effectiveness on short to medium run lengths. Since the launch of the original model in 2010, the upgraded UJF-3042FX was released in October last year and sports additional features such as an automatic primer function and a flexible ink option.
The UJF-3042HG not only provides the increased functionality of the greater head height, but is able to utilise six-colour printing plus white and clear capability. A newly developed white ink circulation system prevents pigment sedimentation as well as increasing the yield of white ink for more efficient consumption and reduced waste.
Receiving the award from Trophy & Engraving News Magazine’s editor, Kylie Gould, Hybrid’s Industrial Products Manager, Mike Lewis, commented “Recognition for the Mimaki UJF-3042HG as a pioneering solution from such an important industry for the product is very satisfying. We’re seeing the companies who invest in technology like this machine benefiting immensely from the revenue opportunities it can deliver.”

Latest technology innovations that add value to print is the message.
Roland DG has announced it will be making its debut this year at the 2nd Annual European Packaging Summit being held in Berlin, Germany on 14th and 15th January 2013. The company said that it will be showing the new ORIS Flex Pack // Web contract proofing solution from CGS Publishing Technologies on its stand as well as presenting a workshop on how its versatile LEC and VersaCAMM VS Series of printer/cutters can help to transform the packaging prototype, proofing and short-run label markets.
The new ORIS Flex Pack // Web contract proofing solution, which includes a Roland VersaCAMM VS-series wide format printer/cutter, has been exclusively developed by CGS Publishing Technologies as an on-demand alternative to slow and expensive legacy systems for packaging proofing, and was showcased for the first time at the Packaging Innovations show in London in October 2012. The full package includes the ORIS Flex Pack // Web software, the Roland VersaCAMM VS printer/cutter, an ORIS heating unit plus a full range of proofing media and the ability to connect to the Esko Color Engine spot colour database. Roland hopes to demonstrate the true versatility of this solution for the packaging sector by also printing on a range of materials using white and metallic inks.
On the 15th January at 3pm, the company will be presenting its interactive workshop at the Summit. Titled ‘Latest technology innovations that add value to print’ the 40 minute presentation will highlight recent developments in Roland’s broad range of wide format digital printers for the design, packaging, prototyping, label and proofing industries. A key focus will be on how its LEC and VersaCAMM VS Series of printer/cutters can print colour accurate packaging prototypes and proofs directly onto the final stock used in production at a fraction of the time and cost of current systems.
Says Steve Chappell, Business Manager - Packaging, Proofing & Industrial Labelling, Roland DG (UK): “We are very excited to be exhibiting and presenting at the European Packaging Summit this year. Wide format technologies are beginning to play an increasingly important role in the packaging sector as more companies look to move away from time consuming and costly legacy proofing and prototyping systems and towards wide format digital printers that can now offer a highly cost effective, on-demand and colour critical solution. Inkjet is a technology that is going to have a huge impact on the packaging sector over the next few years and Roland is a pioneer in this area with highly versatile machines like our LEC Series and VersaCAMM range.
“With the CGS offering, there is now a genuine inkjet-based turnkey contract proofing and prototyping solution that will provide design agencies, repro houses and in-house packaging departments with huge savings in consumable costs and production time without any compromise on the quality or the consistency of the packaging proof. I’m looking forward to introducing Roland DG and all we have to offer to all those key influencers and decision makers at the Summit.”

Once again HP is bringing out its big guns to demonstrate how its technology can open new market opportunities for manufacturers, retailers, designers and digital print service providers. At Heimtextil the HP Designjet line-up will be spearheaded by key solutions from the expanding HP Latex portfolio.
The company said that HP Latex Inks are highly versatile and can print on a wide range of rigid and flexible substrates including textiles. As the prints are odourless, this also makes them particularly suited to enclosed environments such as restaurants, cafés, or schools.
During Heimtextil, HP will demonstrate how vibrant and customised wall murals can be printed on-demand and installed. As well as HP Latex Printers, visitors to Heimtextil will have the opportunity to see the capability of HP’s large-format flat-bed UV hybrid printing solutions that can output distinctive designs directly onto rigid media (including wood, metal, ceramics and glass) for other modern home decor applications, including those that require the use of white ink.
In the run-up to the show, HP is offering a free and exclusive swatch book comprising the broad range of wallpapers that can be printed with water-based HP Latex Inks. To obtain a copy of this swatch book, please visit: www.hp.com/uk/heimtextil.

New printer makes its German debut
at prestigious exhibition.
Mimaki has announced that it scooped the Viscom “Best of 2012” award in the prestigious Large Format Printing category with its new JV400-SUV printer. This was the sixth edition of the Viscom ‘Best of’ awards which were held on the first night of November at the Frankfurt exhibition. It also marked the printer’s debut in Germany for the first time.
The JV400-SUV utilises Mimaki’s newly developed inks which feature the flexibility of solvent combined with the durability of UV curing inks. During the printing process, the solvent in the ink is absorbed by the receiving layer of the media and the pigment is therefore securely anchored in the substrate. The UV unit then cures the ink, which provides the completed print with a smooth and shiny surface. Mimaki said that ensures the prints are highly scratch resistant, weatherproof and immediately dry.
The JV400-SUV is available in 1.3m or 1.6m widths and achieves a print speed of up to 18 m2/hr. Distributed in the UK & Ireland by Hybrid Services Ltd, its national sales manager, John de la Roche welcomed the award which was received on the night by Mimaki Europe’s marketing manager, Mike Horsten. “The JV400-SUV opens up new options for sign and display companies and the initial impression of the printer is very exciting,” commented de la Roche. “The glossy and hardwearing finish of the output provides a unique product for print providers and we look forward to demonstrating this solution to our customers very shortly.”
The Viscom Frankfurt jury consisted of editors-in-chief of trade magazines Large Format, TVP and SignPro Europe, representatives of the Zentralverband Werbetechnik e.V., EFRA Lichtwerbung Ernst Franke, Acrylland GmbH and of the organizer of Viscom, Reed Exhibitions Deutschland.
Further information on the JV400-SUV and Mimaki’s full range of products can be found on Hybrid’s website at www.hybridservices.co.uk

Digital printing can have the immediacy of the online age
HP took the opportunity to present its new digital printing solutions and business models for publishing at the recent Frankfurt Book Fair.
As we all know the publishing market is undergoing dramatic changes, and HP believes its range of solutions is ideal for the next big thing in publishing - Print.
"Digital printing presents exciting opportunities for publishers to meet the demands of the modern market and produce books of lasting value that have the immediacy of the online age," said Paul Randall, market manager, Direct Marketing, Transactional and Publishing Segment, EMEA, HP. "HP Indigo and HP Color Inkjet Web Presses deliver the quality standards of traditional book publishing while offering a business model for today's commercial environment."
As usual the HP stand featured the HP Digitally Printed Bookstore filled with a comprehensive range of books, printed on HP Indigo and HP Color Inkjet Web Presses. The store is a novel way in which HP can demonstrate the versatility and quality of digital book production with examples including art books, fiction, children's books, travel books and versioned and personalised books.
With the ability to print on coated, uncoated, gloss and recycled stocks, HP maintains its digital presses are suited to most categories of book production and can be used in conjunction with finishing equipment for case and perfect bound books.
At present, there are some 250 specialist book printers using HP digital presses in 50 countries across six continents. Representatives from some of these international book printers had an area on the stand where they were available to talk about the business benefits and advantages of digital book production, networking and the ability of publishers to "Think Global and Print Local."
It’s estimated that the market for digitally printed books will grow to 151 billion pages by 2014, and a growing number of specialist digital book printers, publishers are well positioned to take advantage of the digital business model.
The main threat of course comes from online information. HP maintains that publishers can respond quickly to market demands and editorial changes and updates by using its digital printing solutions and compete against the web.
It highlighted three main benefits that publishers can enjoy by digitally printing their books:
- Reduced risk: By only printing what they need, lead times can be shortened and the risk of having to warehouse books is greatly reduced. With an average of 30 per cent of printed books returned to publishers and eventually pulped, this represents a great potential saving.
- Revenue streams from backlists: About 90 per cent of a publisher's list is out of print. With digital printing, it is possible to bring books on the backlists into production again quickly and cost-effectively.
- Print on-demand: With easily controlled run-lengths, it is possible to release only enough books onto the market to meet demand, but not so many that they will require warehousing. Reprints are easy and fast, and present a far lower risk than a conventional print requiring more copies.
Most importantly, HP emphasised that all of the above can be achieved without compromising print quality.
The HP digital press range.
The HP Indigo 5600 and 7600 Digital Presses and the B2 (75cm/29in) format HP Indigo 10000 Digital Press offer sheet-fed options to commercial printers that want to add high-quality, short-to-medium run books to their product offering. The B2 format of the HP Indigo 10000 Digital Press enables the production of lay-flat books, coffee table books and large dust-jackets.
For web production of colour books, book covers and other publications, the new HP Indigo W7250 Digital Press, with a 340mm (13.4in) web width, is designed to print up to 10 million A4/letter-size pages per month.
New presses for longer runs of books and other mono or colour publications in the HP Inkjet High-speed Production Solutions range include the HP T360 Color Inkjet Web Press (web width 762mm/30in) and the HP T410 Color Inkjet Web Press (web width 1066mm/42in). For shorter runs, the HP T230 Color Inkjet Web Press (web width 558mm/22in) is a full-specification entry-level press for the publishing markets.
