Roland DG’s marketing campaign “I’m a Roland user and proud of it” – centres on meeting happy customers in the UK and posting video testimonials live on the firm’s website.
With a VersaCAMM SP-540i and Eco-Sol Max inks, Freestyle Designs produces a wide range of signage, shop facades, vehicle graphics and full-colour printed graphics for almost any application.
Jayson invested in the machine three years ago and believes the quality is still as it was on day one. Even at the highest speed setting (7.8 m2/h), the quality and solidness of the colours produced by the VersaCAMM are excellent, according to Jayson, who runs 95 per cent of his work at this speed.
“This machine stood out because we’re quite limited on space so one of the key things that sold it to me was the integrated print and cut,” said Jayson. “Everything is produced on one machine which makes it fast and efficient and cuts down on waste.”
“It was also very easy to use from the day the engineer came out to install it - within just four hours of installation we were producing work on it that was going out the door.”
Pro-Tect Safety Signs prints an array of rigid and flexible signs on materials ranging from self-adhesives and banner material to reflective media, canvases and everything in between. Its four Roland SolJet XC-540s run almost constantly, producing hundreds of signs a day.
Harry Walker of Pro-Tect Safety Signs said: “It’s important for us to be able to produce high quality work, quickly and the Roland machines tick all the boxes. They really are up to the challenge posed by the versatility of the work that comes in for us and the roll-up mechanism makes them very attractive. You can literally put a whole roll on the back and leave it to print straight through – unless there’s a problem with way the material is manufactured, the Roland won’t let you down.”
Both Freestyle Designs and Pro-Tect use Roland’s VersaWorks RIP software, which every Roland wide format printer comes equipped with as standard. The VersaWorks is a core part of the Roland synergy – hardware, inks and RIP – which the company maintains makes for easy to use yet powerful signmaking solutions. Updates to VersaWorks are made available for free download online so users always have the latest version.
Jayson’s VersaCAMM and all of Harry’s SolJet XC-540’s came with a 12-month Original Silver RolandCare warranty, which includes accidental print head damage, technical support and an engineer on-site within guaranteed response times along with all parts, labour and transport costs. After the 12 months, both extended their RolandCare warranties to ensure their guaranteed peace of mind, Harry after being let down by a third party warranty.
Harry concluded: “The service has been fantastic. It’s usually the same engineer that comes in every time and he even showed me some tricks on illustrator recently! Thanks to him we can now get the files from the computer to the machine with the correct spot colour, which is priceless.”

The UK display printer GJ Plastics Ltd has purchased an HP Scitex FB500 Industrial Printer which the company hopes will extend its product range and produce innovative high-quality POS displays.
The Manchester-based company specialises in point-of-sale display units ranging from large wall displays to magazine and brochure stands for a wide array of markets.
However, it was the company's work producing printed POS displays on polypropylene, Foamex and laminated MDF that led to its investment in the HP Scitex Industrial Printer which was supplied by CWE Solutions.
It manufacturers a wide range of container and display products made from these durable, long-lasting materials, including newspaper and magazine dump bins; ticket towers; portable voting stations; questionnaire, customer feedback and survey stands; competition entry displays; and ballot, deposit and suggestion boxes.
Because these are not run-of-the-mill large format products, GJ Plastics has made major investments in specialist equipment to cut and bend its displays to produce individual products.
Graham Croston, director, GJ Plastics Ltd explained:
"We use our highly accurate lasers and CNC routers to cut the dump bins in durable 5mm White Foam PVC, not cheap 3mm substitutes," he said. "It is far longer lasting than cardboard because it is not affected by humidity, moisture and general spills. The HP FB500 fits well into our production requirements and quality values."
The HP Scitex FB500 Industrial Printer can print on virtually any rigid or flexible material in seven colours, including white on rigid substrates up to 122 x 163 cm and up to 64 mm thick.
"The UV-curable inks used by the FB500 printer enables us to print direct to the substrate and bend it to finished shapes without cracking," Croston continued. "We believe we're the first company in the world to be carrying out this combination of direct printing and bending. This capability can take us into new areas and enable us to design new products.
GJ Plastics believe that HP and CWE Solutions have a similar forward-thinking approach to technology and business and this is why we chose to partner with them. In particular, we value the training and support we have received from CWE and we are pleased that HP has enabled us to be using UV-curable and not solvent-based ink as part of our commitment to environmental best practice. To this end, we've also worked to improve our recycling and now recycle about 100 tons of material each year - which is about 95% of our waste."
"We have three in-house designers to develop products for us and our customers," said Croston. "With our combination of cutting edge equipment, contemporary product design and a client base that needs to be innovative, we're able to merge the techniques for sign production into the display market, and that makes the future look very exciting."

Marketing provider, FastAnt, based in Leicester, UK, has purchased an HP Scitex FB7600 Industrial Press which the company hopes will enhance its service offering and deliver an in-house POP/POS capability to its retail customer base.
FasAnt, a subsidiary of offset-litho print company, Taylor Bloxham Ltd, is an existing HP Indigo digital press customer. A key deciding factor in the purchase of the new press was that it had reached a 'critical mass' in the volume of POS work it outsourced to other suppliers. This reliance on outside parties meant that it had very little control over when it could distribute materials to its clients.
The company decided to investigate the market for a suitable press to solve its dilemma. It submitted artwork to three manufacturers of large format printers, and viewed up-close demonstrations. It finally selected the HP Scitex FB7600 Industrial Press based on its combination of speed, quality and upgradeability.
Matthew Wennington, FastAnt's managing director explained the process.
"Before we approached the three short-listed suppliers, we had an extremely clear idea of exactly what we needed,” he said. “We have to be as efficient as possible and ensure we don't have money tied up in equipment unless it's working very effectively for us. As a result, we only invest in something once we are absolutely certain that it will pay dividends for us."
As part of FastAnt's evaluation process, different artwork for different substrates, based on real life customer requirements, was created and sent to each supplier to print. When the samples were returned, Wennington assembled FastAnt's design and POS sales teams to view the results, having first obscured the manufacturer's names.
"This internal 'Pepsi challenge' resulted in the HP Scitex FB7600 consistently scoring the highest on every printed sample we displayed to our sales team, and as these are the guys that would eventually have to sell, that was effectively decision made," he explained.
In addition to the HP Scitex FB7600 Industrial Press' high visual quality of printed output, FastAnt was impressed at its ability to handle a wide range of different substrates - including those generally considered to be difficult. During these demos Wennington witnessed the press' performance first-hand:
"One media type that we use in high amounts is corrugated board," he continued. "I was stunned by the FB7600 press' ability to handle this material, which proved troublesome for the other devices we looked at and required continual operator intervention.
"Part of the sample designs we submitted to HP included those printed onto corrugated board using the highest saturation level. The FB7600 printed around 100 straight-off in about an hour and without skipping a beat, so we knew if it could handle that, it could handle any substrate we threw at it," he added.
For FastAnt, the HP Scitex Press' ability to tick the right boxes in terms of speed and quality was paramount. This was important and, says Wennington, highlights the capabilities of large format digital printing to the company's parent offset printing business, Taylor Bloxham.
"Taylor Bloxham is widely acknowledged for its focus on quality and colour consistency, which is underscored by the fact that it prints the colour cards for three major paint manufacturers," continued Wennington. "The fact that the group selected HP technology reflects our belief that it delivers on the stringent quality levels required for our customers. We believe it will open up opportunities to grow business among existing clients as well as attract new ones."
The HP Scitex FB7600 Industrial Press prints up to 95 full-size sheets/hr in production speed and up to 55 full-size sheets/hr with POP quality on a wide variety of media up to 25mm thick, while a six-colour UV-curable HP FB225 Scitex Ink set provides excellent dot gain and an impressive colour gamut up to 600dpi resolution. In addition, a new edge-to-edge printing feature means that final-size sheets may be printed, which eliminates the need for trimming, thereby saving substrates and reducing product damage through additional handling.
Celebrating its tenth year in business in 2012, FastAnt offers end-to-end marketing support to a wide-ranging base of retail clients. Its service offering comprises POS design and production, direct marketing, marketing fulfilment, eCommerce, digital printing and print management. Taylor Bloxham, established in 1939, is one of the largest independent lithographic printers in the UK and in 2007 received the Queen's Award for Enterprise for Innovation in Printing.

UK-based FFEI Ltd, a global developer of digital imaging solutions, launched its new, end-to-end, digital label solution, FFEI Caslon, at drupa 2012. The new machine is designed to provide label printers with the capability to produce short-to-medium run labels, on-demand, with advanced colour capabilities, variable data printing and substrate versatility. FFEI also announced it is now the official SME sponsor of the BLOODHOUND SuperSonic Car (SSC) project, which aims to break the world land speed record.
The new press which went on show is a complete digital label solution comprising a Caslon digital inkjet press with a new digital spot colour unit printing white ink, and FFEI's new RealPro Digital Labeller software.
"For PSPs looking to enter the digital labels market for the first time, or existing digital users looking to simply extend their application base to seek new markets, the opportunities that the FFEI Caslon package represents are significant," said Andy Cook, FFEI managing director.
Caslon, a digital colour inkjet press jointly developed between FFEI and Nilpeter A/S, can be installed as part of a traditional narrow-web label press or utilised as a standalone digital inkjet system. It offers web widths of up to 420mm and the Caslon converts high quality labels at 25 metres per minute rising to 50 metres, depending on application demands. The press is built on the industry-proven Nilpeter FA line web transport flexo press, and promises companies moving into the digital label market reduced business risk and disruption.
The new digital spot colour module will be available from FFEI and reseller partners and is an independent Caslon digital spot colour unit providing a high opacity, digital UV-curable white ink for printing on a wide range of substrates. It can be positioned before or after the main CMYK unit, which FFEI maintains will create new possibilities for printing on transparent material for backlit applications or printing white as a spot colour. The company said that this will eradicate the need to pre-print white ink via a traditional press – ‘shortening production times, minimising cost and providing increased job control.’
In addition, label converters at drupa saw FFEI's newly enhanced workflow solutions for the label market. RealPro Digital Labeller targets digital label printers requiring an end-to-end workflow.
Regarding the company’s sponsorship of the BLOODHOUND project Cook added:
"This year we decided to sponsor Bloodhound in recognition of the world-leading innovation behind the SuperSonic Car project, which we believe is synonymous with our company ethos of investing significantly in R&D and ultimately pushing the technology boundaries. In fact, our drupa show theme of the ‘complete solution' exemplified in our latest development, FFEI Caslon, was part inspired by the similarities in Bloodhound's approach - the engineering excellence, attention to detail and inspired thinking, to form a ‘complete package' designed to achieve record-breaking results - emulating our own approach to product development and customer service."

HP has said that a newly established company, Shere Print Limited will install the first HP Indigo WS6600 Digital Press in the UK. The investment equips the business with high-quality digital print capabilities that can offer its customers the advantages of digitally printed flexible packaging, such as cost-effective short-runs and innovative new applications.
Shere Print, based in Lincolnshire, UK, was founded in December 2011 as a division of the Ultimate Packaging group. HP said that the company decided to install the HP Indigo WS6600 Digital Press as its first printer due to the high productivity, substrate versatility and print quality achievable with the press. It added that the company strongly believes that these capabilities will help them successfully enter the competitive flexible packaging industry and quickly attract new customers.
Chris Tonge, sales and marketing director of Ultimate Packaging commented: "The digital market is still new to us, but our expectations are high. We are aiming to become one of the world’s leading businesses in the digital packaging industry and I believe that the latest HP technology will support us and help make this a reality.”
The HP Indigo WS6600 is designed to deliver cost-effective short runs which HP says will enable Shere Print to meet the growing demand for smaller, more frequent orders, driven by a need for businesses to reduce inventory costs and waste.
In addition, HP believes the new press will allow Shere Print to offer their customers a wider range of products utilising the benefits of HP digital printing, such as personalisation, coding and marking and the exclusive HP Indigo White Ink option, which allows customers to print on a larger variety of specialised substrates, including transparent, metallic and coloured media.
"To meet our objectives for the company, we need to offer innovative products that meet today's marketing trends. The features of the HP Indigo press will not only help us do this, but enable us to do it cost-effectively and with a fast, efficient production line," continued Tonge.
With a printing speed of up to 60 metres per minute, and a new Enhanced Productivity Mode that increases press throughput by 33 per cent for most colour jobs and by 25 per cent when adding white ink, HP pointed out that the HP Indigo WS6600 press pushes the crossover point of digital vs. conventional processes by up to 50 per cent. This increased productivity enables the Print Service Provider (PSP) to be flexible, efficient and profitable as well as deliver time-sensitive jobs with ease. It also said that the new optional Inline-Priming unit also enables PSPs to print on almost all carton types, allowing customers to choose from a wider range of substrates, increasing production flexibility and lowering media-related costs.
Ultimate Packaging provides design, photography and print solutions using flexographic presses to some of the leading food brands in the UK. Shere Print, on the other hand, has been set up to offer only digital, narrow web-packaging solutions. As a group they are now able to offer the customers a wider range of products, in offset and digital print.
Tonge concluded: "I see big potential in digital solutions for our industry and HP's technology is a leader in the analogue-to-digital transformation. Shere Print is still in the early stages of development, but we are confident it will grow quickly and establish a clear competitive edge with the many production advantages of our digital technology. Our existing customers have already shown great interest and are excited to see the first products printed on the HP Indigo WS6600 Digital Press.”

Roland’s DG’s has reported that its innovative and informal café style stand at the recent Sign & Digital UK exhibition paid dividends for them at the UK’s premier signage trade show. The Roland Café formed the centre of a hub of Roland dealers and the company said that it drew in hundreds of new and existing customers to meet informally with Roland business managers and staff, Roland users and other signmakers.
Roland announced that record numbers signed up to the Roland Forum community (and were rewarded with complimentary refreshments!) while Roland’s signmaking and personalisation technology attracted a lot of attention. In particular, the new double white ink configuration option now available with the VersaCAMM VS and the VersaSTUDIO BN-20 printer/cutters seemed to prove particularly popular.
Brett Newman, technical director, Roland DG (UK) said: “It was fantastic that the opportunity just to meet with us and other users drew so many visitors to the stand. We’re proud to be so close to our users and the show was a valuable opportunity to connect with them and develop a mutual understanding of the direction they want to go and the solutions they need to succeed.
“Some visitors were understandably cautious about the immediate future but the prevailing attitude really was positive. Many arrived keen to explore new technology that could help them to expand and improve revenue streams and, in that respect, the BN-20, the flexible and reliable VersaCAMM VS series and the desktop VersaUV LEF-12 inspired visitors with the sheer range of possible applications.”
Roland customers Jayson Godridge, Freestyle Designs and Fraser Moore, Compass Graphics (both VersaCAMM users); and Pete Colman, Classic Lines Plus Signs (VersaCAMM VS-640 metallic, SolJet SC545 white, EGX-350 and Metaza MPX-80) were all on the stand sharing their Roland experiences with visitors.

RolandCare had its own dedicated space, with a number of people signing up to Extended RolandCare warranties over the three days, with the added bonus of receiving the gift of a new Nikon digital camera. The offer remains open until camera stocks last and any new Roland customers in need of an extended warranty, direct from the manufacturer should visitIn total there were nine authorised Roland dealers at Sign & Digital. The entire Roland portfolio of products – SolJet, VersaUV LEJ-640 and LEC-540, VersaCAMM SP’s and VS’s, VersaArt RS-640, VersaStudio BN-20 and Roland EGX engravers line – were represented at the show, whether for printed signage or engraved products.
Roland also said that the streamlined workflow of the integrated print-and-cut set-up proved as popular as ever with the VersaCAMM VS-640 machine continuing the tradition of being productive, easy to use and affordable. The latest generation features a gold print head for high print quality and the highest speed of any VersaCAMM. Owners can choose from a variety of ink configurations for greater flexibility: 4-colour for high speed, 6-colour for high quality and metallic for high value. Roland has also recently announced a new double white ink configuration and there is still time to take advantage of Roland’s VersaCAMM VS special offer. Every VersaCAMM VS-640 purchased before the end of April will come with a two year Silver RolandCare warranty, a 12 month full-membership subscription to isignstock.com and a take-up unit, essential for unattended printing.
The company said its VersaSTUDIO BN-20, a 20” wide desktop sized complete production studio for display graphics, stickers, promotional goods and garments, with a low price point but high performance, is fast becoming one of its best-sellers. It is now available with a white ink option. This solution, which combines high quality, vivid and durable print with integrated precision cutting, comes bundled with all the necessary software to bring new levels of versatility to a signmaking business. It prints metallic ink quickly and easily and gives graphics and promotional items an added “wow” factor, with integrated contour cutting simplifying nested and step-and-repeat designs.
Another ‘hit’ at the show was the VersaUV LEF-12 printer geared at businesses of all sizes. Easy to use, the machine enables printing of logos, images and text directly to a wide range of materials and objects up to 100mm deep, including wood, card, papers, films, glass, polyesters, metal, leather and plastics. Users can personalise an array of popular consumer items including mobile phone cases, USB sticks, pens, diaries and notepads. Using Roland’s Eco UV-curable ink, the CMYK palette of the LEF-12 is complemented by LED curing, white ink and clear varnish. This latter feature not only enables special textures and effects, but is also ideal for three-dimensional textures, gloss or matte embossing including Braille.

Roland DG (UK)’s VersaSTUDIO BN-20 and VersaCAMM VS Series eco-solvent metallic inkjet printer/cutters now offer a specialised new ink configuration for white-colour printing applications. It is available in five colours for the BN-20 (cyan, magenta, yellow, black and white); and seven colours for the VS Series (cyan, magenta, yellow, black, light cyan light magenta and double white). Users can choose the ink configuration that best suits their business needs at the time of purchasing.
“White colour printing is currently available for screen and gravure printing,” said Brett Newman, technical director, Roland DG UK. “However, the high costs involved in plate making with these traditional methods means that small volume printing becomes unprofitable. In addition, these traditional methods can take a number of days to deliver a few pieces of print. With the new white-colour configuration, Roland’s BN-20 and VS Series are an ideal solution for small printing businesses, design offices and medium-sized screen printers to increase productivity, add value to their offering and cover a wider-variety of their customer’s needs.”
In today’s market, the life cycle of a product is getting shorter, and as a result visual communication tools are becoming more significant to enhance retail promotions and drive sales. With innovative solutions such as the new white ink configuration, Roland DG aims to provide printing businesses with the tools to meet the growing demand from brand owners, retail outlets and design houses for small volume and specialised printing.
VersaSTUDIO BN-20
The BN-20 is a 20” wide compact Eco-Solvent inkjet printer/cutter. It easily produces small volume graphics, labels, apparel, window graphics and signage on a wide variety of media including transparent film, all from your desktop. A key feature of the BN-20 is that it comes with the Roland Print and Cut workflow that prints and precision contour cuts graphics of virtually any shape.
VersaCAMM VS Series
The VS Series Eco-Solvent inkjet printer/cutters are available in 4 different widths: 30”, 42”, 54” and 64”. Using transparent film and the new high-opacity white ink configuration, the VS Series can produce a wide variety of high-quality applications such as window displays, labels, decals or small production packaging prototypes. The new white ink configuration increases speed by 200 per cent for standard white colour printing compared to the previous Roland configurations for even higher productivity. The combination of a dedicated dryer and blower fitted on the VS Series device significantly increases productivity, and assures efficient drying of the white ink even in high opacity mode.
For precision printing, “TIFF Merge” function has been added to both the VersaSTUDIO BN-20 and the VS Series. The TIFF Merge function sends and prints a process-colour data file and a white-colour data file at the same time, preventing any gap between the two files, which can occur when the two files are sent to the printer and printed separately.

Duncan Jefferies, marketing manager, Hybrid, said: “Launching new products with three completely different ink types demonstrates Mimaki’s continued commitment to innovation, within multiple markets and delivering a highly creative suite of solutions.”
Dave Rainsford, general manager for Ireland, Hybrid, said: “We’ve seen excellent numbers of Irish visitors on the Hybrid stand throughout the course of the exhibition and it’s a positive sign that things are changing around, that Irish companies are looking at investing again and are committing to looking into new technologies”.
“Our Irish reseller network has been well represented, bringing existing and prospective customers to the stand to look at the new latex, UV and dye sub machines from Mimaki – as well as our big range of outdoor durable solutions,” he said.
Amid the excitement at the new product launches, Laura Hutchings of Silk Screen Advertising won the Spot the Ball competition – taking home a signed football jersey from legends Arthur Albiston and Lou Macari who helped Hybrid celebrate the exhibition’s 25th anniversary.
Hybrid and its reseller network now anticipate a busy period installing machines and working closely with their customers. For those who didn't make the show, open days and product demonstrations are available on request.
