Phil Lynott.
A Very Personal Story.
Well folks where do I start. Bob Tallent, co-publisher of DPNlive threatened me with all sorts of things if I did not write a little bit about a very special man I knew since childhood and from my own music career, the late always great Phil Lynott.
As a friend when living, I only had to ask him for help if something came up for charity or the poor and he was right on it with free gigs etc. Now I can’t say the same for some other of the more famous people in the business that had the nerve to ask for fees. How mean could you be?

The Irish Rocker with the Famous Sunburst Battered Strat.
This Irish blues-rock guitarist would be 64 if he was alive today. He was born in Donegal, raised in Cork and died at 47 years of age. As a charismatic live performer in the Irish band Taste, he sold 30 million albums worldwide. Although he didn't tour the U.S. enough, spending most of his time in Europe, he was, however, known for his no-holds-barred, marathon live shows at clubs and theatres around the United States. A comprehensive biography hit the shelves late last year (2012) written by Marcus Connaughton.

He started to work aged 7. And then became The Greatest Jazz Musician in the World!
This famous black American would be 112 if he was alive today. He was the grandson of a slave and has an airport and a park named after him. Jazz was the major influence in his life and he was born in an area so poor that it was nicknamed “the battlefield”. His father abandoned him just after he was born and his mother earned money as a prostitute. He was imprisoned at 11 years of age for firing a gun in the air. During his time in the Coloured Waif's Home for Boys he got music instruction and developed a love for it. Later on in life he was recognised for his characteristic and unusual voice as well as his mastery on the trumpet.

The Drifter who wore the White Suit.
This Irish singer was perhaps the biggest international star to come from the showband era and has had huge appeal both in Ireland and Internationally. He had 57 UK & Irish hit singles in the 1960’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s and brought out 22 albums up to his sudden death in 2007. While he never broke America, he played in Chicago, New York, Boston and Las Vegas as well as many other countries around the world, including Russia.

Can you even remember them? Have a look at the videos and bring yourself back into time. Do you know who was at number one for the longest time? I was surprised to see it was Whitney Houston.
