Gartner Magic QuadrantGartner Magic QuadrantHP has just announced that industry analyst firm Gartner, Inc. has named the company a “leader” in its 2011 Magic Quadrant for Managed Print Services (MPS) Worldwide.

In the Gartner Magic Quadrant report, HP was evaluated on its “completeness of vision” as well as its “ability to execute.”

The Magic Quadrant is a graphical representation of a marketplace, at and for, a specific time period. In this Quadrant it depicts Gartner’s analysis of how particular vendors measure up against criteria for that marketplace, as defined by them.

Gartner classifies leaders as organizations or companies that provide MPS to a wide range of customers. These include the largest and most geographically dispersed, so organizations must be able to demonstrate a truly global reach. This involves not only demonstrating the skills to deliver today’s MPS, but also the understanding, initiative and resources to prepare for tomorrow’s MPS. Leaders typically enhance the full scope of MPS with a wide range of added-value services.

HP maintains that its Managed Print Services can help organizations save up to 30% and more on overall printing costs. It also offers some customers a HP Printing Payback Guarantee. Simply put, HP offers to study a business, assess its particular needs and then project potential savings. If the organization doesn't reach those savings within twelve months after implementation, it makes it makes up the difference.

With more than 3,000 customers worldwide, HP MPS says that it provides a clear path for turning printing and imaging into a vital, value-added asset.

John Tomesco, Vice President, Enterprise Market Development, Managed Enterprise Solutions, Imaging and Printing Group, HP said:

“Organizations across a range of industries are automating document and workflow processes through HP MPS to achieve their strategic objectives. We believe today’s industry analyst recognition confirms the inherent value that HP delivers to help enterprises do more with less and free up their time to focus on their core business and customers.”

Global pulp markets

The overall global demand for market pulp has been weakening over the past four months, particularly that of hardwood pulp. Pulpwatch reports that global shipment of BHKP pulp fell from 1.76 million tons in June to 1.41 million tons in July. Although shipments picked up in August and September, the outlook for the next six months is for lower demand and reduced pulp production as compared to the same period last year.

On the other front the softwood market pulp (NBSK) price has fallen from its record high in June earlier this year. In just a few months, the price has fallen by almost $100/ton to $930/ton as of early November, according to FOEX.

Global lumber markets

With limited production data still available for the full third quarter, initial reports indicate lower production levels in the U.S., Eastern Canada, as well as the Nordic countries, Russia and a number of other countries in Europe. In addition, some of the largest lumber-consuming countries in the world imported less lumber in July and August than they did in the previous months. These included the US, the UK and Germany. Even China which had the fastest increase in imports earlier in the year appears to be slowing down as well.

British Columbia sawmills have been running at an 83% of capacity mainly due to continued strong exports to Asia. Production during the first eight months reached 8.2 million m3, which was 7.2% higher than the same period in 2010.

Other numbers which were up included Softwood lumber imports to Japan which are up 9% so far this year with industry sources saying that total imports for the year may reach around 6.8 million m3, the highest import volumes since 2007.
