On 30 June 2015, PayPal and eBay (PayPal is an eBay Inc. (Nasdaq: EBAY) company) announced that nine Irish charities will receive funding totalling over €33,000 from the eBay Inc. GIVE Foundation. The nine benefiting charities were all nominated by employees of PayPal and eBay, at their Blanchardstown, Ballycoolin and Dundalk offices, and their grant allocation was determined by the results of a vote carried out in PayPal and eBay. Almost 700 employees engaged in the voting process.

Giving back to the community has been an essential part of eBay since the very beginning it says. In 1998, with a donation of 107,250 shares of pre-IPO stock, eBay created a charitable fund known as the eBay Foundation™. Today, this remains an important part of the company and serves as the primary vehicle through which it contributes to community organisations. Annually eBay Foundation provides grants to numerous non-profit groups that are working to make local communities better places to live and work. However, its tiny money compared to what these companies generate in profits!

On the 30 June, a cheque was presented to the main beneficiary, The Children’s Fund for Health, which is set to receive almost €7,000 from the GIVE Foundation. The presentation was made by Louise Phelan, Vice President of Global Operations for Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), PayPal and Hazel Mitchell, Site Director, eBay.

It’s all part of our corporate social responsibility strategy which is our commitment to making the world a better place by enabling growth, enabling greener commerce and powering giving. Each of our chosen charities does hugely important work, and I am delighted that, as a company, we can offer financial support of this scale to such worthy causes. It is great to see our teammates nominating the charities dear to their heart and getting involved with these charities throughout the year.”
